Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – It was a rough beginning to the 2013 Baseball season for the Garden City Buffaloes, after losing 9-1 and 10-4 to the Word of Life Fire from Wichita last Friday in their opening games of season. In game one it was a close defensive battle through the first five innings with the Fire holding on to a 2-1 advantage, but the 6th proved to be the demise for the Buffs giving up 6 hits walking a batter and two reached base on errors allowing 6 runs from 10 batters in the top of the 6th, giving Word of Life an 8-1 lead. The Fire would tack on one more in the 7th and Garden City had nothing to offer losing their first game of season 9-1. Edgar Montoya took the loss for the Buffs going 5 and 2/3’s innings giving up 7 runs, from 7 hits, walked five and struck out 8. Word of Life received a stellar perfomance from Dwight Rahming on the mound, as he struck out 12 and walked only one for the dominating win.

Game two was similar in many ways even though the Buffaloes took an early 3-0 lead, before the Fire responded in the 3rd to tie the game a 3-3. In the bottom of the first lead off batter Isiah Rodriguez walked, Marco Zapata was hit by the pitch but was thrown out on a six-four play, after Thomas Salario hit a ground ball to short, leaving Salario aboard on the fielder’s choice. Junior Mitch Hernandez came to the plate and took the first pitch for a screaming double down the left field line, scoring Rodriguez and Salario giving the Buffs their 2-0 lead. Rodriguez would score again in the bottom of the 2nd after a walk and scoring on a wild pitch, and the Buffaloes would add one more run in the bottom of the third from Emillo Parr. That was it for the Buffs, as the Fire would get hot in the 6th again, scoring 7 runs off of 4 hits, plus three walks and one hit batter and then closed out the game for a 10-4 victory. Word of Life remains unblemished on the season with a 6-0 record, while Garden City is 0-2 to start the season. Next up for Buffaloes is Wichita Heights on Tuesday at Clint Lightner Field.
