Newton breaks school record as Garden City rolls over Redlands
Garden City, KS (Garden City Community College Athletics)-About the only thing negative that Jessica Newton did on Saturday was draw a yellow card. And even that was questionable.
The sophomore broke the school record with five goals and five assists as Garden City demolished Redlands, 13-2 at Broncbuster Stadium.
It was the first time since August 17 of last season that Corey Bryant’s team scored in double figures. It was also Newton’s third career multi-goal game (she had two vs. both Dallas Mountain View and Seward last year).
Newton’s first goal was a thing of beauty, using an inside-out dribble before smashing one past the keeper from 20 yards out.
After Ariel Martinez and Andrea Aguilar scored within 20 seconds of each other to make it 3-0, Newton did it again, slipping one into the back-right corner of the net. She added another just moments later to cap off a first-half stat line that included three goals and one assist.
The sophomore then setup Yvie Miller for a goal 47 seconds into the second period before scoring her fourth goal off a pretty pass from Selena Poveda. She then beat the keeper in a one-on-one situation later in the period for her final tally, capping an historic afternoon.
The Broncbusters were in attack mode all afternoon, outshooting the Cougars, 31-4.
