Garden City, KS (Garden City Community College Athletics)-Oscar Zelaya had to wait two extra days to make his triumphant return to the Garden City sideline.

It was well worth the delay.

48 hours after their scheduled regular-season opener vs. Pratt was canceled, Jack Cartwright had a goal and an assist, and Garden City toppled Laramie County, 3-0 Saturday afternoon at a sweltering Broncbuster Stadium.

It was Zelaya’s first match in Garden City brown since his team finished fourth at the national tournament back in 2008.

With air temperatures reaching into the upper 90’s at kickoff, Garden City never missed a beat. Cartwright scored 12 minutes into the match beating a pair of defenders before lofting a line-drive shot just right of the box for a 1-0 advantage.

In the 31st minute, Cartwright squeezed a perfect pass to Axel Padilla, who deposited the ball past Laramie County keeper, Luke Hyatt.

The Broncbusters added some insurance nearly seven minutes into the second half when Thomas Napindi took a deflected ball in the box and caught Hyatt leaning right. He rolled the ball left into the net for a 3-0 lead.

Garden City (1-0) doubled up Laramie in shots, 18-0 and had 12 corner kicks. Goalkeeper Andrei Filho had five saves.
