Fire at Garden City home claims one family pet

Garden City, Kan.–An early morning fire on Saturday claimed the life of one family dog, while the second was saved.
 
Just before 4:39 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a structure fire at 2700 block of Belmont Place in Garden City. All members of the family were reported to have evacuated but were unsure of the location of their two dogs.
 
Upon arrival, Command identified a single-family residence with heavy smoke and fire showing on the back side of the structure. Fire personnel from Engine 1 and Engine 2 began fire attack at the rear of the structure.
 
Personnel from Tower 1 completed primary and secondary search operations and successfully removed one dog to safety. Despite rescue efforts, the second dog was found dead. An Animal Control Officer was requested to assist with the animal.
 
The fire was called under control at approximately 5:05 a.m.
 
Fire Marshal Gene Robertson responded to the scene for the fire investigation. Upon completion of the investigation, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental. No damage estimates are known at this time.
