Garden City High School junior Maddix Shook captured the individual 6A state golf title last week on his home green at Buffalo Dunes, becoming only the third individual to ever win state in boys’ golf in program history.

Shook began competition with a two-under-par performance through the first 18 holes shooting 70 in virtually perfect weather. As the winds picked up and began to hamper the competition, Shook rose to the occasion on day two, only securing one bogie through the final 18 holes, and being the sole individual to break 70, shooting a championship winning 69.

The margin of error was slim as the second-place finisher, Ty Lasley of Blue Valley West missed on capturing the crown by one point, acquiring a tournament score of 140, only one point off of Shook’s championship caliber 139. Shook becomes the first Buff to take home the state title since Sion Audrain, who won two championships, one in 2019, the other in 2017.
