Lady Beaver softball goes 3-1 over two straight days
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a busy two days for the Scott City Lady Beaver softball team, as they were in Ingalls for a doubleheader on Thursday, and played host to Garden City on Friday. The Lady Beavers would win three of four over the two-day stretch, falling to Cimarron on Thursday, and defeated Hugoton on Thursday and swept Garden City on Friday.
Starting in Ingalls on Thursday, Scott City was a part of a triangular with Cimarron and Hugoton. Against Cimarron, the Lady Beavers would lead 2-1 through the first five innings. In the sixth inning, Scott City would add a run in the sixth inning, only to see Cimarron respond with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. The Lady Beavers got a run in the top of the seventh, but that was all they could get as the Bluejays picked up a 5-4 win, snapping Scott City’s 12-game winning streak. Cheyenne Cramer gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits with 13 strikeouts in six innings of work. Cramer and Malorie Cupp each hit a home run for Scott City.
In their second game on Thursday, Scott City would face Hugoton, and bounce back. After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Beavers led 2-1 after two innings, and built their lead to 5-1 after the third inning. Hugoton pulled to within 5-4 in the fifth inning, only to see Scott City pull away with five runs in the fifth and added five more in the sixth to win by run rule 15-5 in the sixth inning. The Lady Beavers had 17 hits in the game, as Cheyenne Cramer had three hits and three RBI, incuding hitting two home runs. Ashlyn Rose had three hits as well, to go along with five RBI and hit a home run. Cramer got the win, giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits, with 12 strikeouts in six innings of work.
On Friday, Scott City played host to Garden City in a doubleheader. The Lady Beavers would win 10-0 in six innings in the opener. Scott City put up two runs in the first innings, and opened the game up with five runs in the second and added a run in the third. They ended the game with two runs in the sixth for the win. The Lady Beavers had 14 hits in the opener, as Malorie Cupp had four hits and drove in four runs to go along with a home run. Crissa Irvin had three hits, and Cheyenne Cramer had three hits and two RBI in the game. In the circle, Cramer had a no-hitter, and struck out eight.
The finale would be much closer, as Scott City would win 3-0. All the scoring would come in the second and third innings of play, as the Lady Beavers scored a run in the second and two in the third. Cheyenne Cramer had three hits and drove in a run, and Ashlyn Rose collected two hits, while Peyton Gentry and Jordynn Kough each drove in a run. Cramer scattered four hits and struck out nine in seven innings to pick up the win. She struck out her 700th batter in her career in game two.
Scott City is now 15-3, and will close out the regular season on Tuesday at home against Cimarron and Hugoton in the second triangular with the teams. The Lady Beavers have secured a top four regional seed, meaning they will host a regional the week of May 13. They are currently tied for first with McPherson, as both teams have two games remaining.
