Scott City tennis with back to back tournament wins, baseball splits in Cimarron

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The winds have been strong all week, but that didn’t deter some of the competition on Monday and Tuesday. Tennis would go to the Phillipsburg Quad on Monday, and turn around and compete in Larned on Tuesday, while the baseball team would play a GWAC doubleheader in Cimarron on Tuesday.

Starting with tennis, a mixed group of varsity and junior varsity players would compete in the Phillipsburg Quad, and it would be a solid day. The Beavers would win the quad convincingly with 25 points, while Hays was second with 13. Avry Noll at No. 1 Singles, and Brody Stoecklein/Brody Strine at No. 2 Doubles would finish in first, while finishing second were Kalo Hineman at No. 2 Singles and the No. 1 Singles team of Dante Franco/Aydon Presson. On Tuesday in Larned, Scott City would win the Larned Varsity Invitaional, as Brody Strine at No. 1 Singles, and Brody Stoecklein and Carson Bennett at No. 2 Doubles would place first. Julian Labra was second at No. 2 Singles, while placing third was the No. 1 Doubles team of Reed Batterton/Kalo Hineman. They were in a three-way tie for first, but lost the tiebreaker. Up next for varsity tennis is the Garden City Invitational on Saturday.

At Cimarron, the Scott City baseball team hit the midway mark of the season with a doubleheader. They would split the twinbill, with a win of 6-1 in game one, while losing a 9-8, 10-inning affair in game two. In the opening game, the Beavers led 2-0 heading into the final inning, before scoring four runs to put the game away. Eloy Ruelas and Trey Ryan had two of Scott City’s eight hits, while Brooks Bailey, Brady Welker and Spencer Cramer each drove in a run. Welker gave up an unearned run on four hits, with 11 strikeouts for the win. In the night cap, the Beavers trailed 5-0 through three innings, but worked their way back into the game. A run in the fourth and three in the fifth pulled them to within one. Scott City plated two in the seventh to lead 6-5, but Cimarron rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Both teams scored a run in the ninth. In the 10th, the Beavers took an 8-7 lead, only to see the Bluejays rally for two runs in the bottom of the frame to win 9-8. Both teams had 10 hits. Ruelas had three hits and an RBI, while Avery Radke and Carson Batterton had two hits, and Cramer drove in two runs. Eloy Ruelas went seven innings on the mound in two different stints in the game, giving up seven runs, two earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts. Brady Welker struck out four in tow innings of relief, and Aaron Armendariz took the loss, giving up an earned run in 1/3 of an inning on two hits. Scott City is 5-5 overall, 2-4 in GWAC play, as they will be home for the remainder of the regular season, as they host Goodland next Tuesday.
