Buffaloes Routed by Liberal, Drop Fourth Straight
GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Garden City Buffaloes couldn’t keep up with a scorching-hot Liberal Redskins squad at Clint Lightner Field. Liberal scored 13 runs in the final three innings to run-rule Garden City, 14-1.
Liberal’s (3-6, 1-4 WAC) power showed up in the middle innings, plating four extra-base hits in the third and fourth frames.
Marco Alonso’s two-run triple blew the deficit open, cranking a Henry Bors fastball into the left-center field alley.
Alonso would reach all four times, recording a season-high three hits and four RBI.
Garden City’s (4-4, 0-4 WAC) only run would come in the ensuing half-inning. Emilio Zundt pushed courtesy runner Ethan Leisure home after a single and error combination, cutting the lead to five.
Zundt finished with two hits, the only Buffalo with a multi-hit game.
The Redskins would punish GCHS’ bullpen in the next half inning with three consecutive RBI doubles, opening up a 9-1 lead.
LHS would tack on another crooked number in the fifth. GCHS failed to come up with a response, going down in order.
The Buffaloes were held to just the one run by Redskins’ starter Brooks Kappelmann. The senior threw all five innings, striking out nine.
The Buffaloes travel to Dodge City for a quad meet on Saturday to face Junction City and Manhattan. Start times are scheduled for 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, respectively.
