Scott City baseball wins two in Lakin

Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a picturesque Thursday of baseball, Scott City met up for their lone doubleheader of the season at Loucks Park in Lakin. It would come down to the pitching staffs in both games, as Scott City would rally late to win 9-8 in eight innings in game one, and they would complete the sweep in a 14-5 win in game two.

After leaving the bases loaded in the first inning, the Beavers would take advantage of runners on board in the second inning, as they would plate two runs to take the early 2-0 lead. A three-run third pushed their lead to 5-0. Lakin would take advantage of errors in third inning to mount their comeback, as they got three runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at five. The Broncs would lead 7-5 after five innnings, only to see Scott City rally with three in the sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead. A throwing error in the bottom of the sixth helped Lakin tie the game at eight. Following a scoreless seventh, the Beavers would get the go-ahead run, on an RBI single by Avery Radke that scored courtesy runner Easton Eisenhour. Aaron Armendariz closed the door with two strikeouts in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. 

Eloy Ruelas went 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits, with four strikeouts. Aaron Armendariz pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the win, scattering just one hit with three strikeouts. Carson Batterton had two hits with four RBI and Brooks Bailey had three hits in game 1. Eli Bemis went 5 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts. Adrik Gomez and Grant Mendenhall had two RBI each for Lakin. Armando Saucedo took the loss, giving up a run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings pitched.

While it was tied early on, Scott City would build a lead that would turn out to be insurmountable. A four-run second inning gave the Beavers the lead for good at 5-1, despite Lakin answering with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. In the third, Scott City sent 12 to bat, scoring six runs, as they added a run in the fourth and two in the sixth to lead 14-3. The Broncs responded with two in the bottom of the frame, as neither team scored in the seventh, as Scott City picked up the 14-5 win to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Brooks Bailey had two hits and drove in four runs to lead the Beavers, while Brady Welker had a two-run triple. Aaron Armendariz pitched five innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits, with four strikeouts. Carson Batterton gave up two runs on a hit with three strikeouts in the final two innings of relief. Armando Saucedo went 2 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs, six earned, on four hits and took the loss. Saucedo and Adrik Gomez drove in two runs each for the Broncs. 

Scott City improved to 3-3 on the year, and will return to GWAC play at Colby on Tuesday. Lakin dropped to 1-3 on the season, and will return to HPL play on Tuesday at Elkhart.
