Oakley leads Girls 4-1A Touranment after the opening day; several area wrestlers advance to the second day
Salina, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The first day of the Class 4-1A State Girls Wrestling Tournament inside the Tony’s Pizza Events Center would be a tough one for the area wrestlers. The girls would take the middle session during the afternoon, and for the first time since the tournament moved to the Class 4-1A division, there will be no area wrestlers who will take home a state championship.
However, there will be still plenty of opportunities to come on Friday. Wichita County’s Jentri Porter, Cimarron’s Veronica Greene and Zoey Jantz, Holcomb’s McKenzie Simon, Stanton County’s Lauren Canny, and Lakin’s Ivy Davis, Ileana Robles and Luna Vazquez will still be competing in the second day, all on the consolation side of the tournament.
Oakley put together a good day and scored 44 points, sending four girls to Friday’s semi-final round. Chanute is in second and Rossville is in third after the first day.
Friday will see the consolation second round, championship semi-finals and consolation quarterfinals be wrestled, with competition beginning at 12 pm.
