Scott City splits with Goodland on Senior Night

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The regular season came to an end on Tuesday night, as Scott City played host to a pair of ranked teams from Goodland on Senior Night inside the Scott Community Events Center. It would be a split of the doubleheader, as the Cowgirls rallied from 11 down to win 45-34, while the Beavers pulled off the upset in a 57-53 victory.

For the first three quarters, the game belonged to Scott City.  The Lady Beavers had an early 8-0 lead, and led 13-5 early in the second quarter, before taking an 18-10 halftime lead, as they held the No. 7 team in Class 3A to under 20% shooting. Both teams couldn’t get much offense going again in the third quarter until late. Scott City had a 25-14 lead with 2:24 left in the third frame. As few of points that had been scored at that moment, you had the feeling it was the Lady Beavers night. Goodland (17-3, 6-0 GWAC) had other plans. The Cowgirls closed the final 2:15 of the third quarter on a 9-2 run to pull to within 27-23 heading into the final quarter. Goodland scored the first 16 points of the fourth quarter, as Scott City (10-10, 3-3) was unable to get any points until 2:48 left in the game. Turnovers loomed large in the final quarter for the Lady Beavers, as they didn’t attempt a shot over the first four minutes of the final frame. The Cowgirls led by as many as 13 late in the game, as they picked up a 45-34 win.

Haley Blochlinger led the way for the Cowgirls wiht 12 points, as they went 15-31 from the free throw line. Goodland finished with 11 turnovers. Scott City had a season-high 30 turnovers, as they got a career-high 15 points from Avery Lewis. The Lady Beavers went 3-6 from the foul line.

With the win, Goodland has now won eight straight in the series, and since 1981, they lead the series 41-30. The Cowgirls won the Great West Activities Conference for a second consecutive year, and Scott City finished fourth in the league.

Scott City entered looking to gain momentum heading into sub-state next Wednesday. The Beavers trailed by no more than one point the whole night, in a game that had six ties and 10 lead changes. They took an 11-3 lead and led by no more than five in the first half. After Scott City led 15-10 early in the second quarter, Goodland, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, used an 8-2 run to lead 20-19 halfway through the period. The half would go back and forth, before the Beavers settled for a 26-25 lead at halftime. Scott City (10-10, 2-4 GWAC) opened up the second hafl with a 9-3 run to lead 35-28 with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Cowboys would score eight of the next 12 poitns to pull to within 39-36 after three quarters. Goodland (17-3, 4-2) opened up the fourth quarter with four straight in the first minute to retake the lead at 40-39. Whenever the Cowboys would lead by one, Scott City would respond each time. The Beavers took a 50-45 lead with 2:29 left. When it looked like they would pull away, Goodland would make a four-point trip down the floor and get to within 50-49 with two minutes left. Leading 52-51 with a minute left, Scott City would be able to close the game with five of the final seven points of the game to complete the upset in a 57-53 win. 

Jackson Rumford had a big night, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while Eloy Ruelas and Avry Noll each had 11 points. The Beavers had 15 turnvoers and finished 17-22 at the line. They were 9-11 in the final period. Goodland got 17 points from Brady Brumbaugh, as the Cowboys finsihed with 11 turnovers and shot 7-14 at the foul line. 

With the win, Scott City snapped a three-game losing streak to Goodland, as they now lead the all-time series 42-32 since 1979. The Beavers were able to eclipse their win total from last year. The Cowboys finish in a tie for second, while Scott City ties for fifth place in the GWAC standings.

Scott City’s girls will be either a nine or 10 seed in the Class 4A Sub-State Tournament, which will put them likely at Clay Center if they are the No. 10 seed. If they are the No. 9 seed, they will likely be at Buhler. Buhler and Mulvane are both 10-9, while Clay Center is 11-8. They have games on Thursday that will count toward sub-state seeding. Their first game is Tuesday, February 27.

The boys of Scott City are currently sitting at the No. 12 seed after Tuesday. With a Clay Center loss at Abilene on Thursday, that would put them up to No. 11. If they end up the No. 12 seed with a Clay Center loss, they would be at Abilene next Wednesday, February 28.  If the Beavers are a No. 12 seed, they would face either Mulvane or Andale on the road. Both Mulvane and Andale have identical records at 14-5. However, Mulvane has a head to head tiebreaker over Andale. If they both win or lose on Thursday, Scott City heads to Mulvane if the Beavers are the No. 11 seed. Scott City would play at Andale if they win over Wellington on Thursday, to go along with a Mulvane loss.

Goodland will be the top seed in both the boys and girls brackets in the Class 3A Sub-State at Holcomb. The Cowboys will host Southwestern Heights on Monday, while the Cowgirls host Cimarron on Tuesday.
