Scott City drops two games in Colby
Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night in Colby, the Scott City Beaver basketball teams looked to bounce back after a pair of tough home losses against Holcomb on Friday night. In their final regular season road trip, it would be a tough night for the Beavers, as the girls fell 52-33, while the boys lost 66-60 inside the Colby Event Center.

When Colby took over late in the first quarter, they never looked back. It was a back and forth game early on with two lead changes. The Lady Eagles led 9-8 early, before they used a 10-0 run and an 11-0 run to take a 30-12 lead late in the first half, before settling for a 32-14 halftime lead. Overall from late in the first quarter to late in the third quarter, it would be a 29-8 run for Colby (12-6, 4-1 GWAC). The Lady Beavers had a rough time getting a scoring run, as they trailed 42-22 heading into the final frame. Colby would lead by as many as 24 at 52-28, before Scott City (9-9, 3-2) scored the final five points of the game.
Colby was led by Alisabeth Barton with 22 points, while Shaylee Holzmeister had 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The Lady Eagles went 7-10 at the free throw line and had 11 turnovers on the night. Scott City got eight points from Erika Felker, as the Lady Beavers went 6-8 from the free throw line, and committed 10 turnovers on the night.
With the win, Colby has now won six straight and eight of the last nine in the series, that the now lead 61-18 since 1980. It was the widest margin of victory for the Lady Eagles in the series since 2015.

Scott City couldn’t have gotten off to any better of a start. The Beavers hit their first six shots and led 13-5 halfway through the first quarter. It would be a lead they would expand to 11 at 27-16 midway through the second. Still, Colby would find their way back in. The Eagles would score the final four points of the first half to make it a 35-29 halftime lead for Scott City. In the second half, Colby (11-7, 2-3 GWAC) would come out shooting well, particularly behind the three-point line. They took their first lead of the game at 41-40 on a three-point shot with 2:04 left in the third stanza, as the Beavers found a way to reclaim the lead at 45-41 late in the quarter. However, it was Colby’s triple at the end of the quarter to pull them to within 45-44 heading into the fourth period. Scott City (9-9, 1-4) had several opportunities to expand on their lead, but the Eagles would stay within arms length. The Beavers led 53-49 with 4:04 left, before Colby ran seven consective points to take a 56-53 lead with 2:39 left. It would be a lead the Eagles wouldn’t ever surrender, as the closest Scott City would get would be two points late in the game. Colby went 9-11 at the free throw line in the final quarter to seal the deal and win 66-60.
Jordan Jones put up 24 points to pace Colby, while Brayden Foss had 12 points, and Max Kersenbrock and Grant Stephens added 10 for the Eagles. They were 15-19 from the free throw line and finished with 14 turnovers. Avry Noll had a career-high 19 points to lead Scott City, while Jackson Rumford finished with 14 points and Eloy Ruelas added 13. The Beavers were only 5-8 from the foul line and had 12 turnovers.
With the win, Colby has now won nine of the last 11 in the series, and lead the series 44-36 since 1979. It was themost points put up since 2021 against the Beavers. Scott City’s 60 points were the most since their 65-47 win over Kingman on January 16.
