Beavers split with Broncs on the road
Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–If you were ranked No. 9 in your classification, it would turn out to not be your night. Tuesday night’s doubleheader featured a pair of ranked teams, one in each game. Lakin would take the first game on a last second three to knock off Scott City 41-38, while the Beaver boys rallied from an 11-point deficit early on to win 47-36 over the Broncs.
Lakin Girls 41, Scott City 38
The No. 9 team in Class 4A according to the KBCA polls saw themselves with a different lineup for the first time this year, as they were missing Megan Trout due to an injury sustained on Friday in Ulysses. Scott City would start out good early on, leading 6-3 midway through the first quarter. The first of four lengthy scoring droughts would affect the Lady Beavers. Lakin (11-5) scored the next 13 points to lead 16-6 in the first minute of the second quarter. Scott City bounced back with a 13-3 run to tie the game at 19 with 3:41 left before the break. The Lady Broncs responded with a 9-2 run that saw the Lady Beavers have a three-minute dry spell, as Lakin led 28-21 late in the first half before settling for a 28-23 halftime lead. Scott City (9-7) responded with the first five points of the second half to tie the game at 28 in the first two minutes. Yet, the Lady Beavers would go scoreless for five minutes. However, the Lady Broncs scored just five points in that stretch. Lakin took a 33-31 lead into the final frame. Scott City scored nine straight to lead 37-33 with five minutes left. The Lady Broncs had a long scoring drought of their own, as they went nearly nine minutes without a point. They would see the Lady Beavers go nearly five minutes without a point, and score five straight to lead 38-37 with 29 seconds left. Scott City was fouled and hit one out of two free throws to tie the game at 38 with 14.8 seconds left. Lakin would get a three-point basket on the right wing from college range by Jara Davidson with 1.4 seconds left to give the Lady Broncs the lead and the win 41-38. Time had run out, but Scott City had called timeout, and they added time on the clock. The Lady Beavers weren’t able to put up a shot in the end.
Samantha Vogel had 14 points to lead Lakin, while Aryn Michaelis added 13 points and Jara Davidson had 11. The Lady Broncs were 7-13 from the free throw line and had 22 turnovers. Scott City was led by Avery Lewis and McKenzie Metzger, who had a career-high nine points. Soctt City was just 4-6 from the foul line and had 18 turnovers.
It was Lakin’s first win in the series since 2016, when they defeated the Lady Beavers 40-39 in overtime in a sub-state semi-final in Lakin. The eight-game win streak by Scott City against the Lady Broncs was snapped, as they now lead the series 29-22.

Scott City Boys 47, Lakin 36
The way it started out, it looked as if Lakin was ready to run Scott City out of the gym. The No. 9 ranked team in Class 3A started out hot, hitting five of their first seven shots, and took a 15-4 lead wiht 4:01 left in the first quarter. That’s when the Beavers stepped up, and stepped up in a monster way. They scored the final six points of the opening period, and used a 10-1 run in the second framke to lead 20-16 at the break. Scott City (9-7) would score the first six points of the second half, and led 26-26 with 5:44 left in the third frame. When it was all said and done, the Beavers went on a 24-3 run from the first to the third quarters to lead 28-18 with 5:25 left in the third quarter. Lakin (13-3) ended a field goal drought of nearly 17 minutes, and they pulled to within 31-25 with under two minutes left in the third quarter. The Beavers closed out the quarter on an 8-3 run to push their lead to 11 at 39-28 heading into the fourth frame. Lakin was able to get to within 43-36 with a little over three minutes left, but it was Scott City who closed the game out with the final four points of the game at the line, as they won 47-36.
Jackson Rumford had a monster game with a career-high 33 points for the Beavers, who were 10-12 from the foul line. Scott City had 25 turnovers in the game. Lakin was led by Dru Patterson’s 13 points and 10 from Colter Oldham. The Broncs ended up 10-19 from the foul line and had 22 turnovers.
With the win, Scott City won in Lakin for the first time since 2019, and in the Lakin Middle School for the first time since 2017. Their back to back wins against the Broncs are the first since the 2016-17 seasons, as the Beavers now lead the series 38-15.
