Lady Busters Slip Late in Loss to Pratt
PRATT, Kan. – Pratt has only hung one women’s basketball jersey in the rafters at Dennis Lesh Sports Arena.
Princess Anderson, who led the Beavers to a come-from-behind win, will surely have her No. 3 up over the court soon.
Anderson’s game-winning layup with 18 seconds to go completed a 21-point comeback for the Pratt Beavers against the Garden City Broncbusters, 78-72, at The Beaver Dome. Garden City once led 50-29 after scoring seven straight points to open up the second half.
Points off turnovers were key for Garden City (10-10, 5-10 KJCCC) in their 96-69 win over Pratt in November, and started the game strong in transition. The Broncbuster scored their first five points off Beavers’ turnovers, scoring seven first quarter points off giveaways.
C.C. Driessen’s corner three sparked an 11-0 run for Garden City, putting them ahead by 11 in the first quarter.
The Broncbusters continued to stretch their lead out down low. Antonicia Moultrie scored 10 second-chance points, with eight coming from less than 10 feet out. Pratt (9-11, 4-11) couldn’t respond well enough, trailing 43-29, as the game headed into the half.
After that, everything seemed to go wrong for Garden City.
Pratt worked fouls against Driessen and Ana Ramos Pires, with both having to sit the majority of the third quarter on four personal fouls.
That allowed the runtretched into 21-5, with Emily Acton drilling consecutive left corner threes. Fortunately, Moultrie found a way to get open again. The freshman recorded a layup off her right hand, after a wedgied three by Carly Lang, to make it 57-50 Garden City heading into the fourth.
Moultrie came up big for the Busters in the fourth quarter, nailing a straightaway three and hitting a game-tying free throw to level the game at 72.
Moultrie finished with 20 points, leading Garden City in scoring for the second time this season.
Anderson would go to work from there, doing what she does best; scoring the basketball. Anderson scored 18 of her 25 points in the second half, including four of the final six points to win it for the Beavers.
Garden City has now lost its last eight matches, dating back to January 3rd’s defeat to Seward County.
The Broncbusters return home for their next two, starting with the Cloud County Thunderbirds on Saturday. Coverage begins on 99.9 ‘The Rock’ at 1:40 P.M., tip-off at 2:00 from Conestoga Arena.
