Hugoton and Scott City split Tuesday doubleheader

Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–A few days removed from the Sterling Invitational, the Scott City Beavers made the trip to Hugoton on Tuesday night to face the Eagles in a doubleheader. The night would see a split, as the Lady Beavers would pull away in the second half for a 50-30 win, while the Eagle boys knocked off Scott City for the second time in five days with 50-37 victory.

The Lady Eagles would jump out early, but the Lady Beavers would pull away in the second half. Hugoton got out to a 9-3 lead with 2:28 left in the first quarter. Scott City responded and pulled to within 9-7 after the opening eight minutes of play, and would take their first lead at 13-12 with 5:32 left before halftime. The Lady Eagles responded four four straight to lead 16-13. It would be the Lady Beavers making the next run, as they closed out the final three minutes of the half on an 11-2 run to take a 24-16 lead. Scott City (7-5) saw their lead cut to five early in the second half at 28-23, and would use a 9-0 run to take a 37=23 lead at the 2:50 mark of the third period. Hugoton (4-7) could only get as close as 10 the rest of the night. The Lady Beavers scored 11 straigth to lead 50-28 late in the fourth quarter, before a Lady Eagle basket made the final 50-31. Hugoton had only three field goals ini the second half. 

Megan Trout tied a career-high with 18 points, which she set on Saturday against Sterling. The Lady Beavers went 16-22 from the free throw line and had 16 turnovers. They doubled up Hugoton on the glass 28-14. Abi Slocum led Hugoton with 14 points, as the Lady Eagles were 8-14 from the foul line. 

With the win, Scott City has won back to back games in Hugoton for the first time since 2018 and 2019. Since 1989, the Lady Eagles lead the series 29-14.

Hugoton Boys 50, Scott City 37
The No. 4 team in Class 4A would lead a majority of the night. After Scott City jumped out to an early 3-2 lead, Hugoton went on a 13-3 run over the final 4:42 of the first quarter to lead 15-6. The Beavers would try and get back into the game, but were only able to get to within 25-18 with 3:12 left before the break. A run of 6-2 put the Eagles up 31-20. Hugoton (9-2) scored the first seven points of the second half to open up a lead of 38-20 with 2:46 left in the third stanza. Their run in the second and third quarters ended up being a 13-2 run over an eight-minute stretch. Scott City (7-5) hurt themselves shooting, as they went without a field goal for over 11 minutes in the second and third quarters, and had some key foul trouble in the game. The Eagles led 40-24 heading into the final period, as they saw their lead dwindle to 48-37 with 2:06 left, before scoring the final points of the game in the final minute to take a 50-37 win. 

Isaac Martin led Hugoton with 15 points, while Desean Lewis added 14 for the Eagles, who had 14 turnovers. Scott City got 12 from Jackson Rumford and 11 from Alex Tarango, as the Beavers were rebounded 18-13. 

With the win, Hugoton has won seven straight at home against the Beavers, and the last five overall in the series. The Eagles lead the series 22-19 since 1989.
