Scott City drops semi-final games
Sterling, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beaver basketball teams were in the championship finals of the Sterling Invitational Tournament on Friday, as the girls faced Smoky Valley, and the boys took on Hugoton. Both Beaver teams would fall short, as the Lady Beavers fell 52-37, while the boys were in a thriller with a league foe in Hugoton, but fell in double overtime 43-40.
Smoky Valley Girls 52, Scott City 37
The Lady Beavers couldn’t get anything going offensively in the first quarter. By the time the shots were dropping, the couldn’t recover. Scott City went 1-10 from the floor in the opening eight minutes, as they trailed by 12 in the quarter at 15-3, and were behind 17-8 after the first quarter. After the Lady Beavers pulled to within seven with 5:36 left in the half, Smoky Valley (4-4) scored nine of the next 11 points to lead 26-12 with 2:19 left before halftime. To open the second half, Scott City (5-5) woudl work their way back to a two-possession game at 28-22 with 4:47 left in the third quarter, and trailed by nine heading into the final stanza at 38-29. The Lady Vikings would take control in the final period with 10 of the first 14 points, and build a 52-34 lead late in the game before settling for a 52-37 win.
Adrian Hazelwood led the way for Smoky Valley with 23 points, while Tinley Scott added 11 points. The Lady Vikings only had six turnovers in the game, and were 13-19 from the foul line. Scott City got nine points from Erika Felker, and Megan Trout had eight points and 11 rebounds, while Cheyenne Cramer tied a season high with eight points.

Hugoton Boys 43, Scott City 40, 2 OT
Points may have been at a premium, but the defense was at a fever pitch in the championship semi-final game. The night featured seven ties and seven lead changes, to go along with physical play from both sides. Hugoton jumped out early to a 13-4 lead, as they forced serveral Scott City turnovers in the opening period. The Beavers would trail 17-10 with 6:06 left before halftime. That’s when the Eagles would go dry, and Scott City would take advantage. A 12-2 run over a six-minute stretch put the Beavers up 22-8 with under a minute before halftime. Hugoton (8-1) scored four quick points before the break to tie the game at 22. Scott City opened up with four points in the second half to lead 26-22 halfway through the third period, only to see the Eagles respond with four in the final three minutes to tie the game at 26 heading into the final quarter. Hugoton took their first lead of the second half early in the fourth quarter, only to see Scott City (7-3) respond and tie the game each time. They took a 35-33 lead with 1:36 remaining, while the Eagles tied it in the final minute at 35. Both teams had a chance in the final minute, but were unsuccessful and they went to the first overtime. Both teams in the first extra session had lengthy scoring possessions, and both went scoreless as they went to the second overtime tied at 35. Hugoton scored the first basket in the first 30 seconds, only to see Scott City respond with three straight to take a one-point lead with two minutes left at 38-37. The Eagles would take over down the stretch with six of the final eight points, as the Beavers had one last chance, but couldn’t tie the game with a three pointer, as Hugoton took a 43-40 win. The last time the teams played a double overtime game was in February of 2019, when the Eagles won 78-77 in Scott City.
Leading the way for Hugoton was Emmett Gaskill with 11 points, while Isaac Martin had nine. The Eagles had 17 turnovers in the game. Scott City got 16 from Jackson Rumford and 11 from Sage Stoecklein. Turnovers plagued the Beavers as they committed 27 of them. The Beavers outrebounded Hugoton 25-14.
