Dodge City, KS. – Seeing a team play their brand of basketball can be so rewarding. Garden City’s new “six seconds, side-to-side” mantra has been paying off in 2024.

Seeing a team play their brand of basketball on the road, against a conference rival it hadn’t beaten in nearly three years? That’s one for everyone to celebrate.

The Garden City Broncbusters hammered their arch-rival Dodge City at the Students Activities Center, defeating the Conquistadors, 109-72, on Wednesday night. The win snaps a six-game winning streak for DCCC in this series, dating back to February 27th, 2021.

“To come in here and win like that, it doesn’t happen a lot,” second-year head coach, Rusty Elmore, said. “I’m going to enjoy this one for a minute.”

Robinson and Jones were a lethal duo in the first half. Brody started things off, scoring nine points and adding five assists in the first 10 minutes.

Once Braxton hit a tough midrange, things just clicked for the Hartford transfer. Jones would score 19 first-half points, going six-of-nine from the floor, nailing all three of his triples.

Jones finished the game with his first career triple-double, logging 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.

“Him and Brody both… have to play so many minutes, but there seems to be no letup,” Elmore said. “We may go through a scoring [drought], but with those two, I just think ‘we’ll figure it out in a minute.’”

Garden City (11-6, 7-4 KJCCC) shot 62.5 per cent from the floor in the first 20, hitting seven of their 12 triples.

“We filled it up, we got it rolling early,” Elmore mentioned. “We had 15 assists in the first half, I thought we could’ve had 25.”

Jordan Frazier began to percolate from three to close the ball game up. The Freshman posted a career-high 21 points, hitting three triples.

Frazier is now averaging 18 points per game in 2024 on the road.

“He’s a guy who was really highly recruited that I thought could’ve been one of the best players on our team,” Elmore said. “Hopefully he’s starting to grow up a bit. If we’re going to make a run at this thing, he and [Isaiah Dixon] have got to be good.”

Dodge City (7-10, 5-6 KJCCC) had five players score in double-figures, Avnoor Bhullar led all Conquistadors with 15 off the bench.

Garden City did a phenomenal job to keep the intensity after their 20-point halftime lead. The Broncbusters would stretch the lead to as large as 38.

The Conquistadors only turned the ball over a combined 13 times in their two victories over the Bronbcusters last season. Garden City forced 14 Dodge turnovers Wednesday night alone.

Garden City faces a key test next up, traveling to Hutchinson Sports Arena to face the No. 14 Hutchinson Blue Dragons. Coverage begins immediately after women’s basketball’s game, currently slated for 5:30 P.M., on 99.9 ‘The Rock’.
