COFFEYVILLE, KS. – The journey from Coffeyville to Garden City can be a grueling one. Five and a half hours across an open state, the hours adding on mile by mile.

For the first time, Rusty Elmore’s journey back from Southeast Kansas was one filled with joy.

The Garden City Broncbusters defeated the Coffeyville Red Ravens, 106-92, at Nellis Hall on Saturday afternoon. Elmore snapped a six-game losing streak against legendary Red Ravens’ coach, Jay Herkelman, getting the Broncbusters to their fourth-straight win.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Elmore said. “What a great game, two teams competing their absolute butts off.”

Garden City’s (10-5, 6-3 KJCCC) point guard started the game unconscious, hitting four of his first five shots, scoring 20 first-half points.

It was Robinson’s most points in a half all season, adding five assists in the first.

“Brody was so good in that first half,” Elmore said.

The second half saw Thomas Tut and Charles Chukwu take over. Back-to-back and ones would help Garden City tie the ballgame at 56.

Those two plays energized Garden City to a 17-2 run. Coffeyville’s (7-7, 3-5 KJCCC) leading scorer, Cris Carroll, was forced to check out after taking his fourth personal foul, and the Broncbusters opened the floodgates.

Big three pointers from Robinson and Braxton Jones would help boost the lead to 16. Tut wouldn’t be stopped, sealing the game with another and-one down the stretch.

The St. Peter’s transfer finished with a career-high 31 points, beating his previous total against Sterling JV in November. Robinson also finished with a career-best, pouring in 29 points for his fourth-straight double-double.

The win marked Garden City’s third straight performance with 100 or more points.

“We want to play fast, that’s how we want to play now,” Elmore mentioned. “Our motto now is ‘first six seconds, side-to-side’. We’re doing a pretty good job of it.”

The Broncbusters take their four-game winning streak back to Conestoga Arena, where they’ll face the No. 8 Barton Cougars on Wednesday. Coverage begins following the conclusion of women’s basketball’s game on 99.9 ‘The Rock’.
