Beavers swept in Goodland
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their final doubleheader before the Christmas break, the Scott City Beaver basketball teams made the trek to Goodland to face the Cowboys and Cowgirls in a non-league matchup. The homestanding Goodland squads would take a pair of wins, as the Cowgirls picked up a 50-33 victory, while the Cowboys used a big fourth quarter to win 64-57.

The Cowgirls never trailed in this game, as they used a big run in the first half to pull away. Scott City had it to within 7-6 and 10-8 in the first quarter, when a big run blitzed the Lady Beavers, and they were unable to recover. A 20-2 run gave Goodland (5-1) a 30-10 lead with 4:47 left before the break. Scott City (4-3) scored the final four points of the half to make it 34-18. Both teams struggled in the second half, as the teams played virtually even. The Cowgirls took a 40-23 lead into the fourth quarter, and they each had 10 points in the final frame to win 50-33. They bounced back, after their 43-game winning streak was snapped on Friday night.
Goodland was led by Jaxi Mitchek with 21 points, who had 11 of her points in the first quarter, and Haley Blochlinger had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Goodland was just 7-16 at the foul line as thay finished with eight turnovers. Scott City got a career-high 16 from Megan Trout. The Lady Beavers had 20 turnovers, as they were 9-18 from the free throw line.
With the win, the Cowgirls have now won seven straight against the Lady Beavers, the longest in the series for Goodland from 1987-1992. It was the first time this year that Scott City has dropped back to back games.

Both teams were off to their best start in the last 10 seasons, to go along with being the last unbeaten teams in the league. There would be six ties and nine lead changes, as the Cowboys would pull away in the fourth quarter for the win. Scott City led early on 15-11, and had a 17-16 lead after the first quarter. The Beavers would go scoreless over the first four minutes of the second quarter, as Goodland (6-0) used a 9-2 run in the second quarter to build a 25-19 lead with 3:43 left before intermission. Scott City (6-1) scored the final six points of the half on a pair of three’s to tie the game at 25 at the break. The first few minutes of the second half would go back and forth. It would be the Cowboys that would make the next big run. A 7-2 run gave them a 36-32 lead with a little over three minutes left in the third. The Beavers would get to within 41-37 heading into the fourth quarter. A big surge by the Cowboys in the first part of the final quarter gave them a 49-40 lead, just 90 seconds into the fourth frame. Scott City would only be able to get to within 51-47, as Goodland pulled away and led by as many as 10 in the final quarter, and picked up a 64-57 win.
Brady Brumbaugh finished with a season-high 25 points for Goodland, as he scored 18 of his points in the final frame. The Cowboys were 14-17 at the line and had 12 turnovers. Scott City was led by Jackson Rumford with 18 points and Alex Tarango tied a career-high with 12 points. The Beavers had 13 turnovers and were 5-6 at the foul line.
With the win, Goodland has won three straight, the first time since 1994-1996. They are off to their hottest start since 2017. Scott City is off to their best start since the 2014-15 season.
