Scott City splits home doubleheader with Colby
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday night was a pair of big early season matchups at the Scott Community Events Center, as Scott City played host to GWAC foe Colby. It would be a split in the doubleheader, as the Lady Eagles would take a 44-37 win, while the Beaver boys won 45-29.

Colby would lead this one the entire way, despite having a couple of ties. Their hot shooting in the first half proved to be too much for the Lady Beavers. The Lady Eagles would jump to a 12-8 lead after the opening quarter. While Scott City pulled to within 20-17 with 2:38 left before halftime, Colby (4-1) scored the final seven points of the half to lead 27-17 at the break. Trailing 29-17 early in the second half, the Lady Beavers responded with a 12-2 run to get to within 31-29 with 1:03 left in the third frame. Scott City (4-2) had their chances to tie or take their first lead, but were unable to get over the hump. The Lady Eagles scored the final points of the third quarter, and built a 41-31 advantage with a little over three mintues left. In the final minutes, the Lady Beavers would pull to within 42-37, but Colby scored ithe final points of the game to take a 44-37 victory.
Alisabeth Barton would have a career-high 30 points for the Lady Eagles, who went 8-13 at the free throw line. They finished with 14 turnovers. Scott City got 10 points from Megan Trout, as they were 6-10 from the foul line. They had 17 turnovers and outrebounded the Lady Eagles 19-15.
With the win, Colby has now won their fifth consecutive in the series and the seventh out of the last eight. They are now 60-18 against Scott City since 1980.

Scott City’s defense would win them the night. The Beavers never trailed, and despite being tied at 2, had a good lead throughout. After that moment, the Beavers went on a 12-4 run to lead 14-6 after the opening eight minutes. They pushed their lead to 19-8 with 5:21 left before halftime, only to go scoreless and see the Eagles score the final eight points of the half to make it a 19-16 game. Scott City (6-0) opened up the second half with 13 straight points to build a 32-16 lead with 2:01 remaining in the third stanza. Colby (3-2) scored thier lone points of the quarter with a three to make it 32-19 entering the fourth quarter. They would stretch the run to be a 10-2 run to get to within 34-26 with 4:38 left. That’s when the Beavers took over for good, and knocked down free throws down the stretch and pulled away for the 45-29 win.
Eloy Ruelas poured in a career-high 18 points for Scott City while Jackson Rumford added 14. The Beavers were 7-14 at the charity line. Colby got 16 from Jordan Jones and 10 from Guy Tubbs, as their three-game win streak was snapped. The Eagles had just three players score, and were only 2-6 from the free throw line. Scott City forced 22 Colby turnovers while committing 10 of their own.
With the win, Scott City snapped a five-game losing streak at home to the Eagles, and a brief two-game skid to Colby. Since 1979, Colby has the edge 43-36. The Beavers continue their best start since the 2014-15 season.
