Scott City holds off Cimarron in doubleheader sweep

Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming off three games in three days over the weekend, Scott City made the trip to Cimarron on Tuesday night to face the Bluejays in a battle of GWAC teams. Despite them being in the same league, this one didn’t count toward the league standings. The night featured a pair of games that would not see more than a 10-point lead all night, as the Lady Beavers held on for a 39-33 win, while the Scott City boys rallied for a 51-47 win.

Scott City led for a vast majority of the night and could not put away Cimarron. The Lady Bluejays would lead early on 6-2, when the Lady Beavers used a 12-2 run to lead 14-8 late in the opening period. Cimarron pulled to within 16-15 with 4:47 remaining before the break, when Scott City (4-1) closed out the half on an 11-2 run to lead 27-17 at the break. In the third period, Cimarron (1-4) outscored the Lady beavers 10-4 to get to wihtin 31-27 heading into the final frame. Scott City hit just one field goal, as they suffered a six-and-a-half-minute drought in the third quarter. The final period saw the Lady Bluejays get no closer than two points, as the Lady Beavers could not separate themselves, as their largest lead in the last quarter would be a the end in a 39-33 win.

Avery Lewis led the way with 12 points, while Megan Trout had 11, as the Lady Beavers went 9-20 at the charity line. They committed 19 turnovers in the game, and were outrebounede 31-23. Cimarron got 12 from Jayna Wilson, as they had 22 turnovers on the night, and were 9-12 at the line.

Scott City as able to snap a seven-game losing streak to Cimarron. The Lady Bluejays now lead the series 17-10.

Scott City wasn’t able to shake off an upset-minded Bluejay squad in the first half. And did Cimarron make things interesting in the second half. Two ties and seven lead changes saw what turned out to be a back and forth game. The Beavers took a 14-13 lead into the second quarter, as Cimarron would rally and lead 19-16 with 4:33 left before the break. Scott City (5-0) closed out the half with a 7-2 run to take a 23-21 halftime lead. They scored the first points of the second half to go up 25-21 early on. Turnovers wouldpile up in succession, as the Bluejays would use that to fuel their run. Cimarron (1-4) hit their first six baskets of the second half, and used an 14-3 run to take a 35-28 lead midway through the third quarter. The Beavers could not get the deficit any closer than three points, as they trailed 37-34 heading into the fourth. Scott City was down 41-36 with 6:56 left, when they turned up the intensity up on defense, that sparked an 11-0 run to lead 47-41 with 2:04 remaining. The Beavers took the lead for good at 43-41 with 5:05 to go on a dunk and three-point play by Sage Stoecklein. After Scott City built their lead to six, Cimarron couldn’t get any closer than four the rest of the way.

Jackson Rumford led Scott City with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Sage Stoecklein added 17 points, and Alex Tarango had 11. The Beavers went 12-15 at the line and had 23 turnovers. Cimarron was led by Trace Koppers 21 points, as he had 15 of them in the first half. The Bluejays finished 2-4 at the line and had 17 turnovers. Scott City outrebounded Cimarron 20-14 in the game unofficially.

With the win, the Beavers have won five straight and lead the series 20-1.
