Broncbusters Break Program Record in Blowout Win

GARDEN CITY, KS. – It’s taken a bit to see what happens when Garden City moves the basketball.
Head coach Rusty Elmore says that his team is at their best when they use ball movement to their advantage, creating high-percentage opportunities.
It’ll be hard to see Garden City any better on the offensive end than what they displayed on Sunday.
Garden City broke a program record, delivering 37 assists in their 116-84 win over the Bethany JV Swedes at Conestoga Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Broncbusters’ previous record was 32 in a win on November 1st, 2019 over Peterson AFB.
The span competed a phenomenal 24 hours for point guard Brody Robinson. The Chattanooga transfer shattered his career-record with 17 assists against the Swedes, right after contributing 13 dimes against NW Tech on Saturday.
“Brody was out there playing 40 minutes, playing hard the whole time,” Elmore said.
One player who really benefitted off the precise ball moment was center Charles Chukwu. The Tulsa transfer went for a career-high 24 points in the victory, hitting his first 10 field goals in the victory.
“We’d like to get it to him more,” Elmore said. “He’s working, and getting better. I’m glad he’s eligible.”
Chukwu sat out the first four games of the season waiting for eligibility to be cleared. Garden City is now 5-3 with their sophomore center in the lineup.
Chukwu closed up December averaging 13.8 points per contest in four games.
“[Brody] rewards me when I run,” Chukwu said. “It’s very fun to play with these guys.”
Everybody was scoring the ball for Garden City, including the bench. The Broncbusters (8-5, 4-3 KJCCC) got career-highs in scoring from Carter Davis (23), Jace Steinmentz (18), and Isaiah Dixon (8).
Davis caught fire in the second half, hitting three straight three-pointers. The sophomore went nine-of-12 in the victory.
“In high school, I was a shooter,” Davis said. “This has been one of the best conferences [to play in] in the country. Every night you have to come ready to play.”
GCCC closes non-conference play with a 4-2 record.
Garden City will resume their schedule on January 3rd at Conestoga Arena. The Broncbusters restart Kansas Jayhawk Conference play against the Seward County Saints. Men’s tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 P.M., coverage can be found on KWKR 99.9 ‘The Rock’.
