Lady Beavers crush Coronado, Scott City boys win overtime thriller
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In the middle of the three-night homestand, Scott City would face off against the Coronado Cougars in the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic on Friday night. It would be the fifth time the Cougars and Beavers matched up. Scott City would see a doubleheader sweep, as the Lady Beavers picked up a 62-32 win, while it took overtime for the Beavers to squeak out a 44-43 win over the Cougars.

Other than an early deficit of 2-0, it was all Lady Beavers. They would extend their lead each quarter, and coast to the win. Scott City led 10-4 after the opening quarter, and used a 14-4 run over a four-minute stretch to build their lead to 27-10 at the two-minute mark of the first half. The Lady Beavers took a 30-14 halftime lead, and never allowed Coronado (1-4) to gain any momentum in the second half. Scott City (2-1) took a 43-20 lead into the fourth quarter, and played their reserves for a vast majority of the final eight minutes. The Lady Beavers would find a way to build upon tehir lead, and took the 62-32 win.
Erika Felker led all scorers with 15 points, as she hit a season-best three triples. Ten players scored for the Lady Beavers that saw 13 total play in the contest. They would outrebound Coronado 31-20, and forced 25 Lady Cougar turnovers.
Leading Coronado was Dayshanay Bruner with 10 points. They would go 12-14 at the charity line in the win.
Scott City has now won all five meetings with Coronado, and have scored 60 or more points in each of the last four matchups.

Other than last year, every game in the series has been decided by five points or less. This year would be no exception. There would be three ties and 10 lead changes througout, including five lead changes in overtime. Scott City led 5-2 in the opening half of the first quarter, before a 6-0 run gave Coronado a 8-5 lead after the first eight minutes. The Cougars scored two points in the second quarter, and it came with 7:02 left before the break. That allowed the Beavers to score the next six points and take an 11-10 lead at the break. Scott City (3-0) scored their first four points of the second half, as the teams would trade 4-0 runs for the first half of the third period. Coronado (2-3) closed the third quarter on an 11-2 run to lead 25-21 heading into the final frame. The Cougars led 30-23 with 6:22 left, when an 8-0 Beaver run put them up 31-30 with 3:13 remaining. Coronado scored the next four and led 34-31, before a three-point play tied it at 34 with 1:11 left in regulation. Scott City had the last chance of scoring before the end of regulation, but had a pass into the paint tipped away, forcing overtime. In the extra session, the Beavers scored the first four points, only to see the Cougars rally and tie the game at 39 with 1:05 left. Scott City got a free throw to take a brief lead with 1:02 left at 40-39. The game would swing back and forth in the final 46 seconds. Trailing 43-42 with 17.2 seconds remaining, the Beavers withstood the Coronado full court pressure, and Jackson Rumford was able to lay it up with seven seconds left to put Scott City ahead 44-43. Dealing withouth any timeouts left, the Cougars would lose the dribble, and the Beavers stole the ball and ran the clock out and came up wiht a win.
Jackson Rumford led Scott City with 22 points, while Alex Tarango added 10. The Beavers barely shot a free throw, as they didn’t go to the line in the second half, and were 7-9 on the night, and had 20 turnovers. Realiti Smith led Coronado with 21 points, and Seth Enoch added 10. The Cougars finished 14-20 at the charity stripe.
With the win, Scott City now holds a 3-2 series lead on Coronado, as the Beavers improved to 15-8 against Coloado schools since 2007. It’s the second straight year Scott City has started out 3-0.

Other scores in the Roundball Classic on Friday saw Altus double up Lamar 44-22 and Garden City defeat LaJunta 46-10 on the girls side, while on the boys side, Lamar defeated Altus 52-42, and Garden City knock off Lajunta 75-49.
Saturday features Altus and Coronado at 1 and 2:30 pm in Garden City, Garden City faces Lamar at 5 & 6:30 pm, and Scott City hosts LaJunta at 5 & 6:30 pm.
