Scott City sweeps Lamar
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their home opener and Clarion Inn Roundball Classic Opener, the Scott City Beaver began their week of Centennial State foes, as they played host to the Lamar Thunder Thursday night inside the Scott Community Events Center. It would be a good beginning to the weekend and home slate, as they Beavers would take two games from the Thunder, as the girls would pick up a 49-21 win, while the boys pulled away for a 63-44 win.

Lamar used an 8-0 run in the first period after Scott City had an early 3-0 lead, but it would be one that the Lady Thunder couldn’t sustain. The Lady Beavers were to within 10-6 after the first quarter, as they started picking up a head of steam heading into the second quarter. In the final three quarters, it was the defense that won the night for Scott City (1-1). A second quarter run of 18-5, that also saw them limit Lamar to one field goal, would put them up 24-15 at the half. There would be a stretch where the Lady Beavers had six consecutive steals. It was much the same in the third quarter, as the Lady Thunder could only score two points, as Scott City had a 12-2 run in the third stanza to extend the lead to 36-17. Lamar (2-2) had scoring droughts of 5:20, 4:30 and and 6:19 in the game. The Lady Beavers would add to their lead in the fourth, on their way to a 49-21 win.
Erika Felker would lead the way with 15 points for Scott City, while Megan Trout added 10 points. The Lady Beavers went 11-16 at the line and had 18 turnovers and 18 steals. They outrebounded the Lady Thunder 26-21. Lamar was led by Brooklyn Robbins with 10 points. The Lady Thunder committed 26 turnovers and were just 3-6 at the foul line.
With the win, Scott City is now 15-10 all-time against teams from Colorado, as this was their first time facing Lamar.

Scott City Boys 63, Lamar 44
Scott City would bookend the game with good offense and solid defense. The Beavers jumped out early on to a 9-0 lead, three minutes into the game. The would extend their lead to 15-5 with a little under three minutes remaining in the opening frame. Lamar started their comeback, and had it to 17-15 with 26 seconds left in the first period, before a Scott City three-pointer extended it to 20-15 after a quarter. The Beavers would lead throughout the second quarter, building their lead up to nine, but no fewer than four points, as they led 32-28 at the break. Lamar (3-1) opened the second half on a 9-4 run to get their first lead at 37-36 with 4:28 left in the third quarter. That would be their only lead. It would spark a big rally by Scott City (2-0), as they used a 15-3 run over the final 3:42 of the third quarter to lead 51-40 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final period, the Beavers scored the first eight points, outscoring the Theunder 27-7 over the final 12 minutes of the game to pick up a 63-44 win.
Jackson Rumford led the way with 24 points, while Eloy Ruelas had a career-high 13 poitns, Alex Tarango added 12 and Sage Stoecklein had 11. The Beavers went 7-12 from the charity line. They outrebounded Lamar 27-23, and forced the Thunder into 25 turnovers. Lamar was led by Lucas Martinez with 16 points, and Jacob Dunning had 12 off the bench. They went just 2-6 from the foul line. Lamar made only three, two-piont field goals, all coming in the first quarter, and had 12, three’s.
Scott City improved to 14-8 against Colorado schools since 2007. They’re 2-0 for a second straight year.

In other scores on the opening day, starting with the girls, Coronado defeated LaJunta 52-21 and Garden City picked up a 51-35 win over Altus. On the boys side, Coronado won 64-34 over LaJunta, and Gardne City was 10 better than Altus 57-47.
Scott City will face Coronado on Friday night, while Lamar will take on Altus, Oklahoma.
