Broncbusters Basketball Dismantles Frank Phillips for First Road Victory
BORGER, TX. – They say that everything’s bigger in Texas.
The Broncbusters got one of their big men cleared for eligibility for Tuesday night’s game. Forwards Charles Chukwu and Thomas Tut made it look easy, dominating all night long.
The Garden City Broncbusters recorded their first road win of the seasonagainst the Frank Phillips Plainsmen, dominating with an 82-52 victory at the PCAC Gym in Texas on Tuesday. Chukwu and Tut combined for an impressive 22 points, missing just one shot in the win.
“If you have a better four-five combination in the country, I’d like to see it,” head coach Rusty Elmore said. “Great team win, glad to get last week out of our mouths.”
The rebounding effort was masterful from GCCC. The Broncbusters out-rebounded the Plainsmen by 12 in the first half and 42-23 on the season.
Chukwu was a big part of that, going three-of-three from the field, grabbing six rebounds. He had two of the most ephatic plays in the first half, including a block on Plainsmen center, Amar Kadic.
The Broncbusters’ (3-2) defensive effort was masterful in the final stages of the first half, holding Frank Phillips to just four points in the final 6:22.
Chukwu closed the first half with an emphatic slam to beat the buzzer, giving GCCC a 36-21 lead at the break.
“I’m glad to have Charles Chukwu out there,” Elmore said. “We look a lot different with him out there, he gives us a presence inside.”
Garden City didn’t let up at the start of the second half, completely taking a packed Frank Phillips crowd out of the ball game within three minutes. The Broncbusters quickly ballooned the lead from 15 to 20, and it just kept growing from there.
For the second-straight second half, Braxton Jones turned it on out of the break. Jones scored 17 of his 28 points against Sterling in the closing 20, they did the same thing again tonight.
Jones hit six straight shots out of the half, closing the game with 26 points, hitting five of his 10 three pointers. It was the fourth straight game that Jones led Garden City in scoring.
Frank Phillips (2-4) was paced by forward Benny Kazadi, who scored 17 points to lead the Plainsmen.
The Broncbusters open up KJCCC play on Saturday as they host the Colby Trojans at Conestoga Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 P.M., or 15 minutes following women’s first matchup with Colby, coverage can be found on KWKR 99.9 ‘The Rock’.
