Scott City hosts Smoky Valley to begin playoffs

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming off their second consecutive district championship, the Scott City Beavers will be at home to open up postseason play, as they face the Smoky Valley Vikings on what will be a cold night at Darner Field.

Smoky Valley comes in 1-7 on the seasons, and as the fourth place finisher in District 7, after they picked up their first win of the year in a 28-6 win at Nickerson last Friday night. The Vikings rolled up 308 yards of offense, all on the ground, in the win. Smoky Valley has had a challenging schedule this year, with the top two teams in Class 3A in their district. Over the eight games this year, they have averaged 11.5 points and 155 yards of offense, while giving up 46 points and 300 yards per game to opponents. The Vikings have just two seniors on their team, as they are led Gavin Stambaugh, who has rushed for under 500 yards and five touchdowns. 

Scott City is 7-1 for a second straight year, after a 50-6 win at home against Colby on Senior Night last Friday night at Darner Field. They would finish 4-0 in District 8 play. The Beavers put up the first 22 points of the game, when the Eagles would get it to 22-6 at the break. Scott City finished with 429 yards of offense, while allowing 178 yards. This year, they have been solid on offense, averaging 36 points and just over 400 yards per game, while giving up 11 points and under 200 yards on defense. Camden Vulgamore has passed for 14 touchdowns over 1,200 yards passing, while Collin McDaniel has 18 total touchdowns, and over 1,400 all purpose yards. 

Tonight’s meeting will be the fourth time the two schools have faced off, as Scott City has won all three meetings in the series. The Beavers won 41-6 in week 9 last year, after Smoky Valley scored the first points of the game on the first play from scrimmage. Scott City is 21-3 all-time in Week 9/Bi-District games. The winner gets the winner of Andale/Hugoton next Friday night.
