Scott City pulls away from Colby

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time since 2020, Scott City played host to Colby at Darner Field on Senior night, as the Beavers looked to clean up some things before postseason play begins next week. It would be a night filled with several mistakes and penalties. In the end, Scott City was the dominant team, taking a 50-6 win over the Eagles to wrap up their second straight unbeaten district slate.

Scott City marched down the field in a hurry for their first score. A four-play drive was capped off on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Camden Vulgamore to Alex Tarango to go up 7-0 after the Jackson Rumford PAT with 9:48 left in the opening frame. The Beavers stopped Colby at the Scott City 30 on fourth down, and they would go six plays down the field and score once again, as Tracer Chapman scores from nine yards out with 4:34 left in the first period. The extra point was missed. Following a Colby interception, the Beavers cashed in on third and goal, as Collin McDaniel would score from three yards out with 3:00 left in the first quarter to extend the lead to 19-0, as the two-point conversion failed.

In the second quarter, the Beavers would go down the field, and were forced into a field goal, as Jackson Rumford drilled the 35-yard attempt to put Scott City up 22-0 at the 8:30 mark of the second quarter. The teams traded possessions, before Colby scored before halftime. Zane Betz would rush in from two yards out with 2:10 left before halftime to pull the Eagles to within 22-6, as they missed the two-point conversion. The Beavers had a good drive down the field late in the half, but a fumble inside the Colby 15 ended the drive.

Colby went three-and-out to begin the second half, and Scott City strung together a series of scoring drives. The Beavers scored on all four second half drives, and their first came with 9:19 in the third period on a 38-yard pass from Vulgamore to McDaniel to go up 29-6 with the Rumford extra point. On the next Scott City drive, a six-play, 76-yard drive saw Griffin Edwards score from two yards out whith 3:13 left in the the third to extend the lead to 36-6 with the Rumford PAT. The Beavers had one more score in the quarter, taking advantage of an interception. On third down, Vulgamore connected with Cayden Couchman from 31 yards out, as Couchman hung on to the ball after contact, as Scott City extended the lead to 43-6 with the Rumford kick.

Scott City closed the scoring off with a 10-play, 69-yard drive in just over five minutes. It was Vulgamore’s seven-yard run wiht 3:23 left to go up 50-6 with the Rumford kick.

Scott City had 429 yards of offense using a balanced attack. Camden Vulgamore was 11-16 passing for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Alex Tarango had 73 yards on three catches and a touchdown, while Collin McDaniel had 96 yards receiving on five catches and a touchdown. McDaniel also rushed the ball 18 times for 145  yards and a touchdown. 

Colby’s Casen Carroll was 6-20 passing for 81 yards and two interceptions. Kasey Giesenhagen caught thee passes for 75 yards. The Eagles ended up with 99 yards passing, as they ran a fake punt pass for 18 yards in the fourth quarter. Colby ended up with 79 yards rushing, as Zane Betz finished with 55 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown. 

With the win, Scott City has won 10 straight over the Eagles at Darner Field, and have extended their lead in the series to 30-18. It’s the first time the Beavers have won back to back contests against the Eagles since 2017-18. Scott City wrapped up their district slate unbeaten for the 23rd time in 43 years of district play, and now are 106-33 all-time. 

At 7-1 for a second straight year, Scott City will host Smoky Valley, who defeated Nickerson 28-6 to pick up their first win of the year. Colby is 4-4, and will play at 8-0 Cheney next Friday night.
