Scott City hosts Colby in regular season finale

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s hard to believe, but tonight is the regular season finale, as Scott City plays host to the Colby Eagles in Week 8 of high school football. Tonight is senior night for the Beavers. 

Colby enters with a two-win improvement from last year at this time, as they enter 4-3 overall and 1-2 in district 8 play, after a 20-14 win at Lakin in non-district play last Friday night. The Eagles trailed 14-0 in the first half, before they pulled to within 14-12 at the break and scored the lone points in the second half to pick up the win. Despite being outgained 286-179, they were able to force key turnovers, and limit Lakin to 283 rushing yards. This year, Colby averages 18 points and 256 yards per contest, while giving up 23 points and 266 yards per game. The Eagles are currently sitting in the final playoff spot entering tonight, and need a Goodland loss at Hugoton to secure a playoff berth. Casen Carroll has thrown for over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns this year, as Guy Tubbs and Kasey Giesenhagen have been the top two receivers, catching 10 touchdowns and netting over 700 receiving yards.

Scott City scored 21 first quarter points, en route to a 58-14 win over the Goodland Cowboys last Friday night on the road. They led 42-0 at the break and 58-0 early in the second half, before the Cowboys scored the games final 14 points. Scott City rolled up 553 yards in the win, with over 350 coming on the ground, and limited the Cowboys to 133 yards of offense, including minus-40 on the ground. This year, Scott City is averaging 34 points and over 400 yards of offense, while giving up 11 points and under 200 yards of offense. Camden Vulgamore went over 1,000 yards passing last week at Goodland, and has 11 touchdown passes this year, while Collin McDaniel has 10 rushing touchdowns and under 800 rushing yards, and over 400 receiving yards. Avry Noll is at around 400 rushing yards and five scores. The Beavers wrapped up the district title last week for a second consecutive year, and will host the winner of Nickerson and Smoky Valley next week.

This will be meeting number 48 between the schools, as Scott City leads the series 29-18. It’s the first time since 2020 that the teams will play at Darner Field. The Beavers won 48-0 at Colby last year.
