Beavers travel to Goodland in District play

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As the regular season winds down, the Scott City Beavers look to continue their push toward the playoffs in a District 8 matchup with the Goodland Cowboys in their final road game of the regular season.

Scott City rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit to defeat Holcomb last Saturday night 21-14 at Darner Field to improve to 5-1 on the year, and 2-0 in district play. The Beavers did not lead until the fourth quarter in their win, after it was tied at 14 heading into the final period. They outgained Holcomb 323-306 in the win. Both teams had the ball for three possessions apiece in the second half. In 2023, the Scott City is averaging 30 points and nearly 400 yards of offense, while allowing just over 10 points and under 200 yards of offense. Camden Vulgamore has passed for nearly 850 yards and nine touchdowns and has rushed for three more, and Collin McDaniel has over 650 yards rushing, with 12 total touchdowns. Defensively, Tracer Chapman leads the Beavers with nearly 60 tackles on the year.

Goodland almost completed a rally against their old rival Colby last Friday night on the road, falling to the Eagles 19-16, as they dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in district play. The Eagles led 19-0 in the third quarter, as the Cowboys forced a safety, and scored two touchdowns late in the final four minutes of the game, but fell short. They gave up 273 yards of offence to Colby, with 190 coming through the air. This year, Goodland is averaging 16 points and just over 200 yards of offense per contest, while yielding 37 points and nearly 350 yards per game. Leyton Cure has nearly 700 receiving yards and nine touchdowns this years, as Zach Thorson has passed for over 600 yards and six touchdowns.

Tonight’s game is the 52nd meeting in the series, as the Beavers have a 40-11 advantage. Scott City has won the last 19 meetings in the series, and have won 11 straight in Goodland. The Cowboys last win came in 2003 in Scott City, and in Goodland, 1997.

A win for Scott City clinches a district title for a second consecutive year, with all the tiebreakers favoring the Beavers.
