Scott City outduels Holcomb

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The 25th meeting all-time between Scott City and Holcomb would live up to its hype on Saturday night at Darner Field, as the Beavers and Longhorns played for the top spot in the Class 3A, District 8 Standings. Avry Noll’s go-ahead touchdown reception, and interception in the end zone with 2:24 remaining completed a second half rally for Scott City, as they outlasted Holcomb 21-14.

The Longhorns would score the first points of the game, taking advantage of a short punt. Damon Mesa gashed Scott City up the middle with a 49-yard touchdown run with 6:23 remaining in the first quarter to put them up 7-0 with the Emmanuel Anguiano PAT. 

Early in the second quarter, Holcomb was stringing together a drive, that would end in an interception at the Beaver 11 yard line. On the first play of the Scott City drive, it was Collin McDaniel scoring from 89 yards out to tie the game at seven with 10:09 left before halftime. Jackson Rumford kicked in the extra point. Late in the first half, it would be the Longhorns who took advantage of a Scott City turnover. On third down at hte Beaver 12, Mesa would score from 12 yards out with 7.6 seconds left before the break to go up 14-7 with the Anguiano extra point. 

After holding Holcomb to a three-and-out to open up the second half, the Beavers played ball control, going 11 plays to tie the game up. A 58-yard drive was capped off by a 10-yard touchdown run by Camden Vulgamore, who dove and hit the pylon wiht 6:43 left in the third frame to tie the game at 14 with the Rumford PAT. The Longhorns put together a four-minute drive that took them to the red zone, but a missed field goal gave the Beavers the ball at their own 20 yard line.

Scott City put together their longest scoring drive of the season. They covered 14 plays, 80 yards in 7:18. With 7:17 left, Vulgamore would throw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Avry Noll, who wrestled it away from a Holcomb defender, to give the Beavers a 21-14 lead, following the Rumford PAT. 

The Longhorns had one final drive, and moved the ball well down the field. On third down from the Scott City 23, a tipped pass in the end zone was intercepted by Noll for a touchback. The Beavers picked up one first down and ran out the clock to complete the rally in a 21-14 victory. 

For Scott City, Camden Vulgamore went 10-17 passing for 143 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Collin McDaniel had three catches for 45 yards, and Avry Noll had two receptions ofr 43 yards and a touchdown. McDaniel rushed for 117 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown. The Beavers gained 323 yards of offense, with 180 yards on the ground.

Holcomb’s Damon Mesa rushed for 167 yards on 20 carries and two touchdonws. Keegan Johnson had 73 yards through the air on 8-13 passing. Korbin Johnson had three receptions for 28 yards. The Longhorns finished with 233 rushing yards and 306 yards of total offense.

Both teams had only three possessions in the second half. 

With the win, Scott City has won three straight in the series for the first time since 2018 and 2019, when they teams met three times in two seasons. The Beavers now lead the all-time series 20-5, and picked up their sixth consecutive district victory. 

Scott City is now 5-1 overall, 2-0 in district play, as they will head to Goodland on Friday. The Cowboys fell at Colby 19-16 on Friday, to drop to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in district play. Holcomb is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in district play. They’ll play at Hugoton on Friday to wrap up district play. The Eagles defeated Cimarron 54-8 on the road on Friday night, and are 5-1 on the year, and 1-1 in district play.
