Scott City hosts Holcomb in a big Saturday night district game
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–There’s no question that Saturday’s matchup between Scott City and Holcomb could go a long ways in determining the front runner for the Class 3A, District 8 title. Two rivals meet up for the 25th time in series history, as it’s the first time the series will be played on Saturday, as Scott City hosts Holcomb at Darner Field.
After their season-opening loss at home to Liberal, the Holcomb Longhorns have put up four straight dominating wins, with their last coming at home last Friday night in a 55-21 rout of the Colby Eagles. While the Longhorns trailed early on at 7-0, they would go up 28-14 at the break, and pick up a 55-21 win. Holcomb is averaging 47 points and nearly 400 yards of offense. Keegan Johnson has passed for 12 touchdowns, while Damon Mesa and Manny Reyes have combined for over 800 rushing yards and 13 rushing scores. Defensively, the Longhorns have three interceptions returned for a touchdown, and have given up 15 points per game, and under 250 yards per contest.
Scott City picked up a big 28-6 win over Hugoton on the road last Friday night for their 18th straight district-opening victory. Following a scoreless first 12 minutes of play, the Beavers put up two scores to lead 14-0 at the break, and led 21-0 before Hugoton scored. In 2023, Scott City is averaging 32 points and right under 400 yards of offense per contest, while yielding nine points and under 200 yards per game. Collin McDaniel has 11 touchdowns on the season, with seven on the ground, while Camden Vulgamore has passed for under 700 yards and eight touchdowns and has rushed for two, and Jackson Rumford has three touchdown receptions.
Scott City leads the series 19-5. However, the series has been virtually even over the last 10 meetings, with the Beavers holding a 6-4 edge. Both teams have averaged just over 19 points in the last 10 matchups.
