Scott City cross country runs at Ness City, tennis 3rd at Ellsworth, volleyball splits GWAC home triangular

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s been a busy week, as the fall sports season heads to the month of October. The Beaver cross country teams competed at the Ness City Invitiational on Thursday, picking up a first place finish for the girls and a second place finish for the boys. Tennis was third at Ellsworth on Tuesday, and volleyball hosted Hugoton and Ulysses and split their triangular.

Starting off with cross country, a warm and breezy afternoon saw the Beavers run at the Ness City Invitational. The Scott City boys finished in second with 71 points, behind meet champion Quinter, who had 56 points. Leading the was was Logan Stoppel, who placed seventh with a time of 19:04.30, followed by Kasten Wren’s 15 place finish in a time of 19:36.40, Bryndan Bailey 16th (19:40.00), Ivan Armendariz 17th (19:49.80), Spencer Cramer 21st (20:02.70), Isaac Bain 22nd (20:06.60) and Isaac Day finished 30th (20:36.90). Scott City’s girls would win the meet with 32 points, and Quinter was second with 34. Belle Trout was the top finisher for the Lady Beavers, as she came in fifth with a time of 23:08.40. Brinlie Stevens would finish seventh, running a 23:31.90, Halle Erazo was 11th (23:46.50), Kami Winderlin was 19th (25:02.40) and Jayden O’Brien finished in 25th place in a time of 25:46.60. Up next is the Lakin Invitational on Saturday, October 7.

Tennis on Tuesday competed at the Ellsworth Invitational, as their season is approaching postseason play. Scott City would finish in third place, as Ellsworth was the meet champion, followed by Clay Center in second place. The Lady Beavers would get third place finishes from No. 2 Singles player in Kennedy Wasinger, and the No. 2 Doubles team of Erin Massaglia/Tayler Koehn. In No. 1 Doubles, Madison Roberts/Tatum Wells placed fourth. Scott City will compete in the Great West Activities Conference meet in Scott City Monday afternoon, and host the Class 4A Regional meet on Friday, October 6. 

Volleyball was at home with Hugoton and Ulysses for a GWAC Triangular on Thursday. Scott City would win their first match of the day, with a 25-20, 25-21 victory over Hugoton. The first set was led by the Lady Eagles early on at 15-12, before Scott City went on a 13-5 run to close the set out. It was back and forth in the second set with seven lead changes and nine ties. Hugoton led the Lady Eagles 21-20, when the Lady Beavers closed the set and match out with five straight to win 25-20. Dayanara Castillo had eight kills and five service aces, while Megan Trout added six kills. In the finale against Ulysses, the Lady Tigers would prevail in a match featured the top two teams in the GWAC standings. Ulysses won 25-21, 19-25, 25-14. Scott City would be tied five times and see five lead changes in the opening set. The Lady Tigers trailed 17-16, and used a 9-5 run to close the set out. In the second set, the Lady Beavers were back and forth yet once again. Scott City would pull away in the middle of the second set when leading 13-12, as they used a 6-2 run to distance themselves enough for the 25-19 win. In the third set, Ulysses trailed 5-4 early on. Following a Lady Tiger timeout, Ulysses took all the momentum and never looked back, using a 16-5 run to lead 20-10, and led by 12 at 23-11, before picking up the 25-14 win. Dayanara Castillo had nine kills, while Megan Trout added eight kills, and Avery Lewis had four kills. Kendall Gentry and Castillo each had two service aces. Ulysses would sweep Hugoton in two sets. Scott City will remain at home for their Scott City Invitational on Saturday, beginning at 9 am. They’ll face Phillipsburg, Lebo, Wheatland/Grinnell and Goodland in pool play. The tournament field expanded to 10 teams this year.
