GARDEN CITY, KS. – Winning the turnover battle can be crucial to any team’s success in a season. Having to overcome losing it, sometimes, can prove to be too much.

The Garden City Broncbusters fell in their week five matchup, losing to the Highland Scotties, 3-0. The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak dating back to 2013 for Garden City.

The Broncbusters’ offense did well to move the ball downfield throughout the opening half, getting to the Scotties’ red zone twice in the second quarter. Execution – which had been a very big positive going into Saturday’s game – was flawed, with GCCC throwing an interception inside the 10 yard line, followed up by getting stuffed at the goal line on a fourth and goal try.

GCCC (2-3, 1-1 KJCCC) out-gained Highland by 80 yards in the first half, but couldn’t covert where it mattered, with no score at the break.

The Scotties converted on the best drive of the game by either team, driving 77 yards on 14 plays to take the lead, with Adonis Coyle making amends for a missed field goal earlier in the game with a 20-yard kick, which proved to be the only scoring in the game.

Garden City had a couple of big plays late on in the game from a few returners. Safety B.J. Blake had a key PBU on fourth down, finishing with a career-best 10 tackles. Linebacker Ja’Corey Hammett recorded his first career interception on a deflection, posting an additional three tackles.

Highland’s (2-3, 2-2 KJCCC) defense held firm, recording four interceptions in the victory, shutting down the Garden City offense.

Garden City begins a three-game road trip next Saturday, as the Broncbusters travel to Memorial Stadium to face the Dodge City Conquistadors. Coverage begins at 6:30 P.M. on the American Implement Pregame Show, with kickoff slated for 7:00 on KWKR 99.9 ‘The Rock’.
