GARDEN CITY, KS. – Fifth-year head coach Tom Minnick mentioned that he and the coaching staff did their best to pick their team up this week.

After back-to-back losses, the Broncbusters’ young team picked themselves up in week four.

The Garden City Broncbusters got their second victory of the 2023 season, blanking the Gordon’s Fine Arts & Sports Academy Panthers, 47-0. Garden City led by 27 at the half, and gave up just four first downs all game.

Garden City’s offense set the tempo on their opening drive, with Kody Kirk finding Geovanni Ribalta for a 47-yard passing play. Kirk found freshman receiver Keyon Brown on the next play for a five-yard TD reception, giving GCCC the lead.

Their first two possessions went for three-play touchdown drives. B.J. Blake returned a punt 33 yards to set up Garden City at the Gordon’s 27 yard line. Three plays later, former Garden City High School standout Jerry Arteaga scored his first Broncbusters touchdown, putting his team above 14-0.

Brown was highly-recruited out of Tallahassee, FL., for his explosive speed, which he got to showcase in the second quarter. The freshman took a screen pass 31 yards, breaking away from multiple Panthers, for his second score of the game.

Brown finished with four receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start.

Garden City added one more score at the end of the first half, with Kirk hitting redshirt sophomore Khamran Laborn for a 38-yard connection down field, then following up with a 14-yard catch-and-run by Laborn for six, 27-0 GCCC at half.

Kirk finished 10-for-12 for 166 yards and three touchdowns in his first career collegiate start.

The Broncbusters only had three offensive possessions in the second half, and scored on all three. Mercer transfer Fred Davis exploded for an 87-yard TD run for his longest carry of the season, scoring his third touchdown in three home games at Broncbuster Stadium.

Backup quarterback Zo’Marion Harper would finish off the game, firing a pretty 40-yard touchdown pass to returning Broncbuster Keyshawn Buckley in the third, then scoring on a one-yard TD rush in the fourth, to make it 47-0.

Harper finished a perfect four-for-four off the bench for 82 yards and two touchdowns all-purpose.

Garden City will look ahead to their second Jayhawk Conference game against the Highland Scotties at Broncbuster Stadium next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 A.M., with coverage starting at 10:30 with the American Implement Pregame Show on KWKR 99.9 ‘The Rock’.
