Big test awaits Scott City in homecoming tilt with Millwood

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time in the history of Scott City football, a team from Oklahoma will be playing football at Darner Field. The Millwood Falcons will make the six-plus hour trip from Oklahoma City to Scott City to face the Beavers in what should be a good game.

Millwood is the second straight opponent for the Beavers that finished as a state runner-up in 2022 in their state’s classification. Last Saturday, they shut out city rival Douglass 81-0 in the Soul Bowl in heir home opener. They led 16-0, before a 39-point second quarter pushed them to a 55-0 halftime lead. They put up 528 yards of offense, with 356 coming through the air. So far, they’ve averaged 52.5 points per game and led by sophomore quarterback CJ Turnbull and junior wide receiver and Oklahoma commit Jaden Nickens. Millwood is 1-1 on the year, as they lost their season opener to Heritage Hall, a No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A in Oklahoma 47-24 to begin the year. The Falcons are at under 400 yards per game, while allowing just over 250 yards per contest.

Scott City is off to a 2-0 start for a third straight year, after they grounded the Wray Eagles 54-22 in their home opener last Friday night at Darner Field. The Beaver jumped out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter, and led 28-14 at the break, and scored the first 20 points of the second half, en route to their second straight win over Wray. The Beavers are led by quarterback Camden Vulgamore, who has thrown for seven touchdowns through the first two games, and senior Collin McDaniel, who has four receiving scores and three rushing touchdowns. Scott City has put up an average of 51.5 points, their highest output of points through the first two games since 1991, and have allowed 17.5 points. It’s an offense that’s averaged over 500 yards and surrendered just over 250 yards in two games. 

Millwood won the first meeting in the series 30-20, rallying for the win in the fourth quarter last year in Oklahoma City. It’s just the second-ever matchup for Scott City against at team from the state of Oklahoma.

The homecoming ceremony will start at 6:30.
