Corn & Sorghum production forecast higher in Kansas, Soybeans lower

Based on September 1 conditions, Kansas’s 2023 corn production is forecast at 677 million bushels, up 33% from last year’s production, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 5.33 million acres, is up 20% from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 127 bushels per acre, up 12 bushels from last year.

Sorghum for grain in Kansas is forecast at 208 million bushels, up 97% from 2022. Area for
harvest, at 3.30 million acres, is up 22% from last year. Yield is forecast at 63 bushels per acre,
up 24 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is forecast at 128 million bushels, down 4% from last year. Area for harvest,
at 4.40 million acres, is down 9% from 2022. Yield is forecast at 29 bushels per acre, up
1.5 bushels from last year.

Cotton production is forecast at 127,000 bales, down 23% from last year. Acreage for harvest, at
88,000 acres, is down 50,000 acres from 2022. Yield is forecast at 693 pounds per acre, up
116 pounds per acre from a year ago.
