Scott City splits home triangular
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–If there’s anything noticable after Tuesday’s triangular that featured three GWAC teams, it’s that the league will be a wide open race this year. It was proven last week in Lakin, with three of the four teams from the Great West Activities Association participating. Tuesday was no exception.
Each team came out with a split on the day, as Scott City took down Ulysses in the opening match 25-16, 25-22, Ulysses defeated Goodland 27-25, 24-26, 25-20 and Goodland knocked off Scott City in the finale 23-25, 25-22, 25-23.
In Scott City’s opener with Ulysses, they never trailed in the opening set, racing out to a lead of 9-2. It was a set that the Lady Beavers would never really see the Lady Tigers come close, as they won 25-16. The second set was more comeptitive, with nine lead changes and 18 ties. Scott City built an early 10- lead, only to see a run of 5-1 by Ulysses to take a 12-11 lead miday through the second set. The margin never grew past one point either side. It would be tied at 22, when the Lady Beavers closed the set with the final three points, and took the match 25-16, 25-22. Dayanara Castillo recorded seven kills, while Megan Trout, Avery Lewis and Katie Weathers each had four kills. Castillo had two service aces and Trout had two block points.
Against Goodland, the Cowgirls jumped out early on to a 4-0 lead, and led for a majority of the set. Goodland led by five midway through at 13-8, only to see Scott City rally to tie the set at 17. The Cowgirls scored the next five points to lead 22-17. That’s when the Lady Beavers rallied to close the set with eight of the final nine poitns to win 25-23. Goodland led early on in the second set 4-1. Trailing 9-7, the Lady Beavers rallied for three straight, and led 13-11 midway through the second set. Scott City would lead 21 16 when it looked like they would go on and complete the sweep. The Cowgirls got into the right rotation and forced a third set with a 9-2 run in the second set to win 25-22. There would be nine ties and three lead changes in the second set. In the final set, there would be 10 ties and five lead changes. It would go back and forth throughout, with the Lady Beavers leading 8-5, before a Goodland run of four straight to put them up 9-8. The final set was tied at 15, when the Cowgirls used a run of 6-2 to lead 21-17. Scott City would slowly chip in to the deficit, and pulled to within 23-22, and 24-23, but fell to Goodland 23-25, 25-22, 25-23. Service errors were costly for the Lady Beavers in the third set, as they committed eight. Megan Trout had nine kills, while Dayanara Castillo added eight kills. Scott City had six service aces, led by Kendall Gentry’s three.
Scott City will be at Hoxie for a triangular on Thursday, while Goodland will be at Burlington Thursday, and Ulysses has nine days off before competing at the Pratt quadrangular September 14.
