Scott City visits Cimarron to open up week 1

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Week 1 is finally here, as Scott City will open up their 2023 slate on the road against GWAC foe Cimarron.

Scott City returns just three starters that started every game on offense, but several who had a good amount of playing time from a 2022 team that finished 8-2, with a narrow loss in the playoffs to Cheney, and eventual Oklahoma Class 2A state runner-up in Millwood. The Beavers were explosive on offense a year ago, averaging 35 points and 319 yards of offense, while allowing just 13 points and 163 yards per game. Defensively, Scott City returns six starters, as they were plus-24 in the turnover margin last season. Jim Turner is in his eighth season leading the Beavers.

Cimarron is returning several key pieces from a team that was young last season. The Bluejays went 2-7, but showed significant improvement down the stretch. They were third in their district, and were a few points from hosting a week 9 playoff game. Offensively, they struggled scoring, putting up just 10 points a contest, while allowing 33 a year ago. They return six defensive starters from last year under second year coach Casey Flax.

Last year’s game was called late in the first quarter, after a lengthy storm delay, with Scott City winning 42-0. The Beavers snapped a two-game winning streak against Cimarron last year, and lead the all-time series 15-7.

Kickoff from Cimarron is at 7 pm, with a 6:30 pregame on KSKL, Mix 94.5. You can also listen online at westernkansasnews.com/mix94.
