Lady Beavers rally to top Holcomb in regional championship

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The word “redemption” was this years theme for Scott City softball. Tuesday’s regional title game with Holcomb was a game of redemption for the Lady Beavers. They fell to the Longhorns on their home field in 2021, giving Holcomb their first-ever trip to state. Last year, Scott City would knock them off for their first-ever regional title. The Lady Longhorns swept the regular season series in Scott City, back in April.

Tuesday’s final was one that lived up to its billing of being a thriler. In a back and forth battle, Scott City would hold on and advance to the state tournament for a second straight year in a 5-4 win over Holcomb.

The Lady Beavers scored first in the second, and led 1-0 until the Longhorns rallied for a three-run third inning. Scott City came back with a run in the fourth, and in the sixth, scored three runs to take a 5-3 lead. 

Holcomb put together a rally in the seventh, scoring a run to pull to within 5-4. With two outs and the tying run on second, the Lady Longhorns would fly out to right field to close the game, sending Scott City to Manhattan.

Both teams would collect nine hits in the game. Holcomb pitcher Korryn Johnson struck out nine in six innings of work, while Scott City’s Cheyenne Cramer also struck out nine in seven innings in the circle. Neither pitcher allowed a walk. 

With the win, Scott City improved to 16-7 overall, and will await their opponent in the Class 3A State tournament in Manhattan on Thursday and Friday, May 25-26. Holcomb closes out their season at 19-2.
