Holcomb softball wins two in Scott City

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursdays GWAC doubleheader featured a pair of teams tied for first place in the league standings, as Holcomb visited Scott City. Wind nine days ago pushed the games back today, and the wind would dominate the day, with winds gusting in excess of 50 mph. The Lady Longhorns would pick up a sweep, rallying in game one 3-2, and closing the twinbill out with a 6-1 win in game two.

Holcomb 3, Scott City 2, Game 1
The opener was a defensive battle. Both teams would be scoreless through the first five and a half innings. In fact, Scott City had the lone hit through the first five innings. They also had the first three baserunners of the game. Holcomb didn’t reach base until the top of the fifth on a two-out error. The Lady Beavers would break a scoreless game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Cheyenne Cramer that scored Malorie Cupp. Mackayla Miller drove in Cramer on the very next at bat to give Scott City a 2-0 lead. Holcomb would take the lead in the top of the seventh inning, with three runs. Rian Rodriguez had their first hit of the day with one out, and she scored on a fielders choice where the Lady Beavers were unable to record an out. Korryn Johnson scored on a passed ball and Ashland Wilson scored on an infield hit to make it 3-2. Scott City had one final chance, as they had a runner at first, but were unable to get the tying run home.

Korryn Johnson struck out 13, giving up two runs on three hits and walked just two batters to get the win, Cheyenne Cramer had 13 strikeouts, allowing just two hits and three runs, two earned, and only one walk allowed.

Holcomb built a lead early on that they would never surrender. The Lady Longhorns had just one hit in the first inning, as they took advantage of three walks and three hit batters. They led 4-0 after a half an inning, and Scott City was only able to get a run back in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Madison Miller, scoring Hannah Tucker. The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth, when Paige Jones drove in Korryn Johnson, and in the sixth, Brooklyn Deniston’s RBI single scored Emma Cornelson. The game was called in the top of the seventh with two outs, due to unplayable wind conditions.

Korryn Johnson struck out 11 in game two in the circle, and gave up an unearned run while scattering three hits. She also drove in two runs and had two hits. Paige Jones also had two hits for Holcomb. Baylee Wolkensdorfer gave up four earned runs in her appearance in 1/3 of an inning pitched. Cheyenne Cramer struck out eight and gave up two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings in relief. The Lady Beavers in their last five innings retired 13 consecutive times.

Holcomb improved to 7-1, and 5-1 in conference play, as they will have time off before their next doubleheader, as they face Ulysses April 25. Scott City is now 5-3 overall, 3-3 in GWAC play, as they will be at Cimarron on Tuesday.
