Conq Men hold off several Moberly Area rallies, reach quarterfinals

Hutchinson, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a big win for the Dodge City Community College Conquistadors, as they advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament quarterfinals with a 77-74 win over the Moberly Area CC Greyhounds Wednesday afternoon at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Dodge City would lead for a over 32 minutes, but Moberly would not go down without a fight. The Conqs built a 20-14 lead with just a little over minutes left before halftime. That’s when a 15-2 run by the Greyhounds gave them a 29-22 lead with a little over six minutes left in the first half. Dodge City trailed by four with over four minutes remaining in the half at 33-29, and closed out the half with 11 straight to take a 40-33 lead into recess.

Moberly pulled to within 40-36 early in the second half, and DC 3 used a 12-4 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to have their largest lead of the game at 52-40 with 14:21 left. The Greyhounds responded with a 15-4 run and pulled to within 56-55 with 9:16 left. Both teams traded runs of six straight after that.

With 4:37 left, Moberly tied the game at 65, and the teams traded three’s to make it 68 all with 4:01 left. Dodge City (25-9) never trailed the rest of the way, as the closest the Greyhounds got was 75-77 with 1:36 left. The final points of the game were on a Jacobi Sebock putback with 1:07 left.

Moberly (30-4) had one final look, but missed a game-tying three, as the Conquistadors rebounded and ran out the clock, taking a 77-74 win.

Jason Edwards had 31 points to lead Dodge City, while DJ Jones had 14 points, Jacobi Seabock had 13 and Cam Malray added nine points and 17 rebounds. The Conqs won the rebounding edge 54-36.

Moberly was led by Tre’von Spiller’s 17 points and 14 rebounds, Teddy Washington added 16 points, Ade Poopola had 14 and Jaheim Tanksley finished with 12 points, as the Greyhounds saw their 20-game win streak come to an end.

Dodge City takes on Tallahassee Thursday at 6 pm, as they defeated five-seed Salt Lake 94-93 in overtime, thanks to a four-point play by Malachi Davis with three seconds left. Davis scored 48 points for the Eagles.
