Conq men, women upset in Region VI semifinals

WICHITA–No. 13 Dodge City’s men erased an 18-point deficit Friday, but Butler held on late for the 80-77 victory, while the 10th-ranked Conq women were upset by Coffeyville in overtime, 75-65, in the Region VI semifinals at the Garvey Center.
In the men’s game, Dodge City trailed for the majority of the contest, but after a 19-1 Butler run early in the second half, the Conqs came charging back to even the game at 75 with 1:37 left in the game. But the Grizzlies scored the next five and that was enough to push them over the top for the win.
Butler dropped in 11 3-pointers and made 23-of-33 attempts from the free throw line. Dodge made just five threes and 16-for-30 from the foul line.
DJ Jones had one of the best games of his career, scoring 26 points to lead Dodge City. The only other Conq in double figures was Chris Robinson with 18.
Javon Grant paved the way for Butler with 22 points.
The No. 13 Conquistadors fall to 23-9 with the loss and will learn their fate for the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson Sunday evening.
In the women’s game, both teams struggled from the field in the first half, but Coffeyville was the first team to find their footing in the third quarter. They made seven of their 11 attempts in the third frame and built a lead as high as seven points.
But the Conqs roared back and with the game tied in the final seconds, both teams missed would-be game-winners, and the game went to overtime.
In the extra period, three different Red Ravens made deep threes, Tetona Woods-Blackowl connected on nine of her 10 free throws in overtime, and Coffeyville snuck away with the upset win, ending Dodge City’s 22-game winning streak.
Leah Mafua and Bree Stephens were the only two players for Dodge City that scored in double figures. They finished with 18 and 15 points respectively.
Woods-Blackowl racked up 22 total points for the Red Ravens, 17 of which came from the foul line.
The No. 10 Conquistadors fall to 29-3 with the loss and will learn their fate for the NJCAA National Tournament in Lubbock Sunday evening.
