Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Monday’s game featuring Colby and Scott City shaped up to be a good one on paper. Both teams recently played to a one-point game February 14, with the Lady Eagles coming out on top 48-47. For the Lady Beavers, the third time wouldn’t be the charm, as Colby used a 15-3 run over the final 3:21 of the third quarter, to pull away with a 50-38 win over Scott City to advance to Thursday’s Sub-State semi-final game in Lakin.

The Lady Eagles raced out to an 8-2 lead early on, and built a 14-6 lead after the first frame. In the second period, it was a quarter dominated by the Lady Beavers, as they held Colby to just two points, and scored the final eight points of the half to take a 17-16 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, Scott City (8-13) took a 23-20 lead with 3:54 left in the period. Colby would get into foul trouble, but that wouldn’t phase the Lady Eagles. They would close out the final 3:21 of the third quarter with a 15-3 run, and take a 35-26 lead into the fourth quarter. Colby (14-7) forced several turnovers over that stretch that fueled their run.

The Lady Beavers pulled to within 41-34 with 4:28 left. That was the closest they got the rest of the night. Colby would convert a four-point play and never led by fewer than nine points the rest of the way. The Lady Eagles would go 10-15 at the foul line in the final frame, as they snapped a three-game losing streak in the first round of sub-state.

Leading the way for Colby was Logan Nolan with 17 points, followed by Shaylee Holzmeister and Alizabeth Barton with 10 points. Scott City was led by Kendall Gentry, who tied a career-high with 11 points.

With the win, the Lady Eagles snapped a two-game losing streak to the Lady Beavers in sub-state play, and are now 8-2 in the postseason series since 1985. It was the fourth straight win by Colby in the series, the longest since 2015-16.
