Garden City, KS (WesternKansasNews.com) – Garden City women’s basketball saw deja vu vs. Cloud County on Wednesday in a 60-55 loss and the men’s Basketball team surged in the 2nd half to take down Cloud County 72-60 for their 5th straight win.

The same sequence of events, same end result for the Lady Broncbusters against Cloud County. Just like their previous three losses Garden City held a significant lead only to see it chipped away and fall behind in the 4th quarter.

After leading by 12 points at halftime Garden City was outscored 36-19 in the 2nd half and failed to record a field goal in the final quarter shooting 0-12. The defense though was what let the game unravel for the Lady Broncbusters.

“Defense and silly mental mistakes for us late in the game it’s the same story over and over again for us,” said Antwain Scales frustrated after Garden City’s loss.

Garden City still had a chance to make the game interesting down four with the basketball and 20 seconds left to go but miscommunication led to an extended possession that ended with a miss and a  Cloud rebound for the win.

Lost in the losing effort was Taya Davis’s near triple-double performance with 12 assists and 12 rebounds she had 10 of each after the 3rd quarter but failed to complete the feat with just 5 points. Leading scorer for Garden City was Dayshawna Carter who collected 18 points.

The Broncbusters have two games left on the season and matchup against Butler on Saturday in a rematch of their worst loss by margin in conference aginst the Grizzlies. The game is scheduled for a 2 pm tipoff from Conestoga Arena.

Garden City’s recent run continued in impressive fashion hanging 72 points on the top defensive team in the conference on Wednesday night. After the first half coach Rusty Elmore defenitly had his concerns as Garden City only led by two points after back to back made threes from Cloud County to make the game 29-27.

“We stopped the turnovers and thank goodness for Dajion Humphrey” said Elmore after Garden City’s 5th straight win and 6th in their last 7th.

Just like in the first matchup of the of the season Humphrey came alive in a little more modest manner after connecting on seven threes in the 1st game he knocked through four in the 2nd game. Humphrey would lead Garden City with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The Broncbusters as a team made eight threes in the 2nd half after only making one through the 1st half. In total 3 Busters finished in double figures and finished shooting 58% from the field with 19 of their 28 baskets being assisted.

Garden City is back on Saturday for a big conference tilt with Butler that will very likely decide who holds the #3 seed in the conference tournament with just two games left to go in the season. You can listen to the Broncbusters on 99.9 The Rock with tipoff scheduled for 4 pm.
