Scott City swept at Goodland
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The regular season came to a close on Tuesday, as Scott City made the trip to Goodland to face the Cowboys and Cowgirls in GWAC play. It would be a tough night for the Beavers, as the girls fell 67-45, while the boys struggled down the stretch in a 41-37 setback.

While the Lady Beavers lost, they played Goodland much better the second time around. The Cowgirls scored eight straight in the opening quarter after the game was tied at two early on. Scott City would fight back and trail 20-14 after the opening period. Goodland (20-0, 6-0 GWAC) scored the first nine points in the second quarter in the first 92 seconds to go up 29-14 with 6:28 left before the break. After the Lady Beavers got back to within 31-20, the Cowgirls scored seven straight to push their lead to 18, before taking a 38-24 halftime lead. Scott City (8-12, 1-5) scored the first points of the second half to get to within 38-26, but runs of seven and six pushed Goodland’s lead to 51-28 with three minutes left in the third frame. The Lady Beavers scored the final seven points of to quarter to get back to within 51-35 heading into the fourth quarter. For the most part in the fourth quarter, the game went back and forth, as Goodland would take a 67-45 win.
Talexa Weeter led the Cowgirls with 33 points, while Olivia Lehman added 11. Scott City got 23 points and 10 rebounds from Brooke Strine and nine from Erika Felker.
The win by Goodland was their 33rd consecutive victory, the state’s longest win streak for the No. 1 team in Class 3A. Goodland has now won six straight against the Lady Beavers, their longest streak since 1988-92 as they lead the series 38-30 since 1981. Scott City has dropped three straight games.

There would be a lot at steak for sub-state in this game, to go along with the GWAC standings. Scott City had an outside chance to host a first round game, while Goodland was looking to get the second seed. A win by the Beavers would’ve also tied them for third place with the Cowboys in the league standings. Goodland jumped out early 9-2, before a 10-1 Scott City run tied the game at 12 heading into the second period. In the second period, the lead would be exchanged three times, as the Beavers took a 22-18 halftime lead, as the Cowboys went cold from the field for 5:40 and scoreless for 4:23 of the second quarter. Scott City jumped out early in the second half with seven straight to go up 29-18 with 5:24 left in the third stanza. That’s when Goodland (12-8, 4-2 GWAC) would take advantage of Beaver turnovers. Over the course of eight minutes, the Cowboys went from being down 11 to being up four at 35-31 with 4:41 left. Scott City (9-11, 2-4) went without a field goal for nine minutes and had a scoring drought of under six minutes. Goodland used a 17-2 run during the time frame. The Beaves wouldn’t be done yet, as they went up 36-35 on a three pointer with 3:46 remaining. However, the Cowboys would close the game with six of the game’s final seven points, as they would take a 41-37 win.
Devontay Hardy led Goodland with 12 points, while Manny Gonzalez added 10. Scott City was led by Lawson Bailey with 13 points and 10 from Dylan Metzger. Goodland won back to back games against Scott City for the first time since 1995-1996. The Beavers lead the series 41-30 since 1979.

The first round of the Lakin Sub-State is set. On Monday on the Girls side, Goodland will host Larned, Cimarron hosts Southwestern Heights, Colby hosts Scott City, and Holcomb will host Lakin. On Tuesday, it’s the boys quarterfinal games, as Colby hosts Southwestern Heights, Goodland will host Cimarron, Lakin hosts Larned and Holcomb will host Scott City. Lakin & Goodland, as well has Cimarron and Larned had identical records. After a coin flip, Goodland would get the two seed and Larned the six seed over Cimarron.
