13 area wrestlers qualify for Class 4A State Tournament

Augusta & McPherson, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Four Class 4A schools from southwest Kansas made their way eastward on Saturday at two different sites for the Class 4A Regional Wrestling Tournament, with Holcomb, Hugoton and Ulysses at Augusta, while Scott City was at McPherson.

In the end, 13, area wrestlers punched their ticket to Salina for state.

At Augusta, Andale would hold off a late run from Rose Hill and Augusta to claim the regional championship. Ulysses had a good showing, placing fifth, and had a regional champion in Justin Degollado at 190 pounds. Hugoton was 10th as Adam Mendoza was their lone qualifier, and was a regional champion at 157 pounds. Holcomb’s lone qualifier was Gregery Martinez, who was seconda t 132 pounds.

In McPherson, Abilene rallied over the final two rounds to win the regional championship, edging NCKL foes Clay Center and Concordia. Scott City was fourth with six qualifiers and Colby placed fifth. The Beavers had three in the championship finals, but could not produce a regional champion. Winning the KWCA Regional Wrestler award was Abilene’s Tucker Cell, while the Regional Coach of the Year ended up in a tie between Josh Brown from Concordia, and James Stout of Abilene.

The Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament will be Friday & Saturday, February 24-25, at the Tony’s Pizza Event Center in Salina.
