Scott City picks up two big wins against Lakin
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As the regular season winds down, two teams in the Lakin sub-state met up at the Scott Community Events Center Tuesday night, as the Beavers played host to the Lakin Broncs. The games would go to Scott City, as the Lady Beavers picked up a 43-31 win, while the Beaver boys won in a thriller 49-46.

Lakin scored the first two points of the night. The rest of the night would belong to the Lady Beavers. Scott City used a 16-2 run over a nine-minute stretch to lead 16-3 with 5:38 left before halftime. It turned out to be a 26-5 run, as they led 26-7 at intermission. The Lady Beavers extended their lead to 30-9 with 6:31 left in the third quarter, when the Lady Broncs would start slowly chipping at the deficit. A run of 8-2 over a four-minute stretch in the third frame pulled Lakin to within 32-17 with 2:09 left in the third quarter. It would remain a 15-point margin going into the final period at 36-27. Scott City (8-9) led by 16 at 39-23 halfway through the fourth frame, before the Lady Broncs made a late run. Lakin (9-6) got to within 41-31 late before the Lady Beavers scored the final points to pick up the 43-31 win.
Brooke Strine led the way with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Kendall Gentry had 10 for Scott City. Lakin was led by Samantha Vogel’s 11 points, all in the second half.
With the win, the Lady Beavers lead the series 28-21, and have won eight straight in the series, the longest in the series for Scott City.

Entering Tuesday night, Lakin held the second spot in the sub-state standings at 8-6, while Scott City was just one game back at 8-8 in fifth place. The finale of the night would be a game that saw 12 ties, eight in the second half, and four lead changes, all coming in the second half. Seven points would be the largest lead in the game. The Beavers jumped out to that 9-2 lead with 3:35 left in the first period, before the Broncs responded with an 8-4 run to get to within 13-10 heading into the second quarter. Lakin tied the game at 15, and 17, before Scott City (9-8) used a 7-2 run to lead 24-19 with 1:36 left before the break. The Broncs scored four of the final five points to pull to within 25-23 at the break. Both teams would go back and forth in the first two minutes of the second half. The third quarter saw six ties, and the first lead change, as the game would be tied at 36 heading into the final frame. In the final quarter, the Beavers led 38-36 in the first minute, before Lakin (8-7) scored the next four points to lead 40-38 with 4:28 left. Scott City responded with five straight to lead 44-40 with 2:04 left. The Broncs wouldn’t go away, as they forced two straight turnovers, and tied the game at 44 with 1:29 left. Scott City got a steak and reclaimed the lead with 42 seconds left at 46-44. Lakin came back down and tied it at 46 on a Colter Oldham layup with 31 seconds remaining. It didn’t take the Beavers long to go down the court, as Lawson Bailey hit a short left baseline jumper with 19 seconds left to put Scott City up 48-46. The Broncs had one more chance, as they missed a shot, got the rebound, but Alex Tarango ripped it away, and hit one of two free throws with 0.2 seconds left. Lakin had one last chance, but the pass was intercepted to make the final 49-46.
Jackson Rumford led Scott City with 18 points, while Lakin got 20 from Colter Oldham, and MJ Gonzalez added 10.
With the win, Scott City snapped a four-game losing streak to the Broncs, and also won their first home game against Lakin since 2016. Scott City leads the series 37-15.
