Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Garden City Fire Department responded to a pair of structure fires on Monday and Tuesday.

The first came at approximately 2:30 pm Monday, the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 2720 North Ray Road. Upon arrival, Command identified heavy smoke coming out of the building.

Fire personnel from Engine 2 were assigned to the position of fire attack. Search and rescue was not needed as all individuals had exited the building prior to GCFD arrival.

Crews were on scene for approximately two and a half hours.

Fire Marshal Robertson responded to the scene and after an investigation, the fire was determined to have originated from a lithium-ion battery failure in a golf cart.

The cause was determined to be accidental. No injuries were reported, and no damage estimates to the structure are known at this time.

Thirteen fire personnel returned after a callback to stations was initiated and worked two additional incidents during that time.

The second fire happened just after 9 pm on Tuesday, as the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a structure fire at 1535 North 13th Street, Apartment 1. Upon arrival, Command found a multi-story, multi-residence structure with no visible signs of fire outside.

Fire personnel went to enter the structure and were met with heavy smoke conditions. Using a thermal imaging camera, personnel found the heating and cooling unit in the basement on fire. The gas supply was immediately shut off on the unit and the fire was extinguished.

Black Hills Energy was called to the scene and completed an investigation of the heating and cooling unit.

No damage estimates are known at this time.
