Conqs sweep Northwest Kansas Tech

GOODLAND–No. 13 Dodge City made 17 of their first 22 shots Wednesday and used that start to bully Northwest Kansas Tech 101-86 in the men’s game, while the 12th-ranked Conq women took advantage of a 31-point second quarter to wear down the Lady Mavericks 72-52 in a doubleheader Wednesday at Max Jones Fieldhouse.
In the men’s game, Jacobi Sebock sparked the hot start for Dodge City, scoring 15 points in the first 10 minutes before going to the bench with two fouls. The Conqs reached the 50 point mark less than 14 minutes into the first half.
After Sebock exited, both Jason Edwards and Cam Malray stepped up and took over the scoring. Edwards finished with 21, while Malray ended up with 15.
Tuscan Onuoha scored a career-high 13 points off the bench for the Conqs on 6-of-9 shooting.
Brennan Brumbaugh capped the win nicely for Dodge City, as he hit his only 3-pointer of the season in the gym where he played high school basketball. The Mavericks share Max Jones Fieldhouse with Goodland High School.
Overall, Dodge shot 54% from the field in the game and 61% in the first half. For the second consecutive game, they buried 12 threes, which was a key piece of their game that was absent during their recent three-game losing streak.
With Coffeyville’s loss to Butler Wednesday, Dodge City returns to first place in the KJCCC.
The No. 19 Conquistadors improve to 16-6 (12-4 KJCCC) with the loss and return to action Saturday when they host Garden City. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
In the women’s game, Dodge City forced 29 Lady Mav turnovers and converted those into 32 points. Northwest Kansas Tech entered the game averaging the sixth-most turnovers per game in the nation.
The Conqs struggled in the first quarter, shooting just 6-for-22 before catching fire during the second 10 minutes. In that quarter, Dodge shot nearly 65% from the field and ripped off 31 points during that span. That separation was plenty to withstand some late turnovers and an ice cold fourth quarter from the floor.
Six Conqs reached double figures, headlined by Leah Mafua’s 19-point effort. Georgia Gray contributed 11, and Bree Stephens, Paris Santacaterina and Shakara Anderson each added 10.
The No. 12 Conquistadors improve to 20-2 (15-1 KJCCC) with the win and return to action Saturday when they host Garden City. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
