Hugoton wins two in Holcomb

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Holcomb was swept by the Hugoton Eagles Tuesday night at Holcomb High School. The Lady Longhorns lose 49-45, while the boys fell 68-62 in double overtime to Hugoton.

Hugoton Girls 49, Holcomb 45
The Lady Longhorns started slow and were down 7-2 with five minutes to go in the first quarter. Holcomb would get back within two points at 10-8. The Eagles closed the quarter on a run and were up 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Longhorns had a lead 20-19 with 1:15 to go before halftime. Jera Kruleski had eight points in the second quarter. Hugoton would close out the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead at halftime 25-20. The Eagles would come out strong in the third quarter and stretch the lead to 35-22 with 2:30 to go in the third quarter for their largest lead. Hugoton would lead 40-29 heading into the fourth quarter. The Eagles would have the lead 42-29 with seven minutes to go in the game. Holcomb would go on an 8-0 run to get it to 42-37 with 2:45 to go in the game. It would be the Eagles would close it out and win 49-45 over the Longhorns.

Hugoton shot 5-13 from three point, 13-24 from inside, and 8-14 from the free throw line. They had 25 rebounds, 10 of those were offensive boards. The Eagles had eight turnovers.

Hugoton was led by Julienne Salazar with six points, Gianna Vos with 19 points, Summya Adigun with 19 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Holcomb shot 5-12 from three point, 12-25 from inside, and 6-6 from the free throw line. They had 28 turnovers, 10 of those were offensive boards. The Longhorns had 16 turnovers.

Holcomb was led by Bella Galliart with 10 points, Jera Kruleski with 13 points, and Halle Jones with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Holcomb fell to 9-5 on the season.

Hugoton Boys 68, Holcomb 62, 2 OT
The Longhorns went back and forth with the Eagles in the first quarter and Holcomb would lead 20-18 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter continued to be back and forth and Holcomb would still have a lead at halftime 32-31.  Much like the second period, the Third quarter was back and forth early and tied 38-38 with four minutes to go in the third quarter. Hugoton would close out the quarter strong and would take a lead 50-43 at the end of the third quarter. Holcomb was down by nine points at 52-43, and then would go on a 9-0 run to tie it up at 52-52 with 3:45 to go in the fourth quarter. The game would be tied at 54-54 and Holcomb had a last second shot but missed it and went to overtime. Holcomb made the first bucket in the first overtime but the Eagles responded. The game was tied at 58-58 and the Longhorns again had a chance at the end and could not convert. In the second overtime the Eagles would take control and win 68-62.

Hugoton shot 3-18 from three point, 21-42 from inside, and 13-15 from the free throw line. They had 26 rebounds, 16 of those were offensive boards. The Eagles had nine turnovers.

Hugoton was led by Isaac Martin with 12 points, Ryle Riddlesperger with 13 points, Emmett Gaskill with 15 points, and Carson Bennett with 26 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double.

Holcomb shot 7-13 from three point, 19-32 from inside, and 3-7 from the free throw line. They had 25 rebounds, seven of those were offensive boards. The Longhorns had 18 turnovers.

Holcomb was led by Brody Deniston with six points, Chris Palacios with seven points and seven rebounds, Kaden Hardy with 11 points, and Drayton Knoll with 20 points.

Holcomb fell to 8-6 on the season.

Up next for the Longhorns is a doubleheader at Goodland on Friday.
